Should I go to bar-tending school or just learn on the spot?

I've been working as a waitress in a bar for a couple months now, I really like it but I would prefer being a barmaid because bartenders make up to 3 times as much as I do. Basically I'm wondering if I should learn as much as I can from the barman and then try to find another job as a barmaid, or go to bartending school. Anybody had the same dilemma?Should I go to bar-tending school or just learn on the spot?
Every place I have worked looks for expierience as opposed to schooling. All of the bartenders I know have never went to bartending school. Talk to your employer about whether or not you would beable to train as a bartender.

Stay with the company you are at, that is your best chance of becoming a bartender, because anywhere you go you will have to work your way up.Should I go to bar-tending school or just learn on the spot?
In my personal experience, learning on the spot is the way to go. I'm sure bartending school would be beneficial, but, depending on where you'd like to work will show how beneficial it will be. You will learn tons of different drinks if you go to school... some of which you may never need to know, depending on the place. Everywhere is different...Should I go to bar-tending school or just learn on the spot?
Im old school, so experience is everything, but these days employers more than likely hire people with some kind of schooling. My job will pay you more if you have a degree.

I would go to school so you won't have to turn to some one and ask "what's in that drink?"Should I go to bar-tending school or just learn on the spot?
pff. HA.

doesnt harvord give classes on that?????

teeheeehee dont tellanyone but im tricking you right now.

How much is the tuition for authentic bartending school?

i actually went to authentic bartending scool in nyc about 7 years or so ago...i took the one week call and it cost me $375 wich really isnt bad.i found that i learned alot but ive never been asked for my bartending license and ive been a full time bartender at many places since then lol..good luckHow much is the tuition for authentic bartending school?
depends on the school and location

i know the local one near me is only about $300... but guessing some east coast ones could be very costly. sort of like colleges, the local college is usually fairly cheap compaired to the ivy-schools.

be interesting trying to apply for s student loan to go to bartending school though, wouldn't it?How much is the tuition for authentic bartending school?
In CA, I've heard it is about $500. Bar tending school isn't really the best way to get a bar tending job though. Restaurant experience, cock tailing, and bar backing is really the way to go. Anyone can mix drinks, but not everyone can deal with the fast paced, customer service aspect of it

Does anyone have any info on ABC Bartending School in detriot MI is it worht going to??? help?

Having been in the restaurant business for 28 years, my advice is NOT to attend bartending school. Its a waste of money. Your best bet is to get a job as a server and work your way up.

The reason for this is because a bar or restaurant owner/manager would rather promote from within or hire someone with experience. Any trained chimp can learn to make drinks (which is what they'll teach you at the bartending school). What the bartending school won't teach you is the ability to multi-task and great customer service skills. Both of these skills can be learned as a server.

So save your money and buy a good bartending dictionary from a used bookstore for $1.95. Get a job in a nice restaurant that has a full service bar. Work hard, show up for work on time, don't call in sick and have a postive attitude. You'll be promoted in no time.

How easy is it to get a job bartending?

For a 21 year old male,

Fresh out of bartending school. How easy is it to get a job bartending?
Walk in and apply at any bar, its that easy. You must sell yourself during the interview that's the best way to get the job. Practice your interview skills. Sure a a lot of people on Yahoo Answers hiring bar staff. Been firing bar staff for 15 years. How easy is it to get a job bartending?
Very hard. You have no experience.

I've been hiring barstaff for over 15 years. My colleagues and I intentionally DON'T hire bar "school" grads. When I used to give them a chance they never had a clue what they were doing. You're better off not broadcasting the fact that you went to bartending school if you want anyone to take you seriously- they're a joke to those of us in the industry. How easy is it to get a job bartending?

alot harder than you think you have to know how to mix drinks and stuff

  • Anyone go to bartending school in atlanta did you actually get a job from it if u did?

It's a rip-off. Did the same thing and it was laughed at by bars. Better off to get a job as a bar-back and let the owners know you would eventually like to be a bartender. Bartending requires real-world experience more than classroom learning.Anyone go to bartending school in atlanta did you actually get a job from it if u did?
not in Atlanta but i did go to one in california. All the bartending schools do help you with placement :

meaning they give you job listings and then it is up to you to apply to these jobs etc.

btw every bar and bartender that i have talked to has told me that they would rather have someone with barbacking experience than a bartender that has graduated from bartending school.

and to answer your question: most people who graduate from bartending school don't get any bartending jobs (given that it is the only bartending experience that they've had.)

    i hope this helps.

21 because you will be serving open containers of alcohol. How old do you have to be attend bartending school?
I don't think there is a specific age limit, they don't use real alcohol, they use colored liquids. But it would be hard to get a job as a bartender unless you are 21.
I believe it is 21 - but you can start training for a bar-back @ 18... and learn the ropes. How old do you have to be attend bartending school?
you must be 21 in order to go to bartending school but you may begin bartending at the age of 18.
depends on the laws pertaining to alcohol in your state. check the law of the landHow old do you have to be attend bartending school?
I don't know if it's different from state to state, but I know in Oklahoma you have to be 21. I had a friend that was dying to go to school, but they wouldn't let her until she turned 21. It doesn't make much since, because they do not use real alcohol. I guess it's just the fact that you can't get a license until you're 21.

I am a college student and need a weekend job. Can I be a bartender without going through one of those bartending schools? If I want to work as a bartender is it necessary to go to one of those bartending schools?
It might not be nessessary, but you will probably have a better chance of getting a job as a bartender if you have some training and have graduated from a bartending school. An employer would rather hire a person with training than one without any.

Bartending schools in the Dallas area?

Dallas Bartending School (972)221-6861 and Aims Academy 1-800-BARTEND both offer classes.

Aims has a lot more connections in the culinary world for job placement, particularly for hotel/restaurant (rather than club/bar). I would recommend Aims over DBS only for this reason if you will need placement assistance.

Could someone give tips for getting bartending job?

I wasted money on going to bartending school. Everyone always says you need prior experience. Can anyone give me any tips or advice as to how I should go about getting a job in this industry? Please help me!!!Could someone give tips for getting bartending job?
It's not about what you know - it's who you know.

I would try to get a job at a busy bar or a large restaurant, not as a bartender, but as sort of a bartenders helper (bar back). It won't pay well, and the work will suck, but that's how you get in. If you do your job well, it won't be long before you're filling in behind the bar and mixing drinks. When a bartending job opens, you'll be first in line - instead of some guy off the street straight out of bartending school.Could someone give tips for getting bartending job?

Bartending school or being a barback?

im confused, school would train me on the ins and outs of the bar and different drinks and mixes and lingo and stuff. but being a barback would give me cool expierence.

im not really interested in clubs and such but restaurants and hotels, classy placesBartending school or being a barback?
being a barback would give you the in and outs of the bar and ask the bartenders how to make drinks when they are not too busy..........the school will teach you over 300 drinks in what 5 days your going to forget all of them un less you make them all the time...... you only need to know about 20 or 30 ........if you like to give way your $ you can send it to me but dont go to the school

Is bartending school a bad idea???

Now I know core bartenders hate the idea, BUT I have a friend who went. It got him into doors he wouldn't of before so. I know it can't help with the 'real' job but the knowledge of drink making has to be worth it.. Right? Is bartending school a bad idea???
In my experience it is better to start as a barback or server and work your way up to the bartender position than to go to bartending school. Many places only hire bartenders from current staff or ones with bar (not just school) experience. Is bartending school a bad idea???
i think its a great way to win cash
It's good money for supporting yourself while getting an education but unless you land a job at a high end (and busy) bar it's not something I would plan a career aroundIs bartending school a bad idea???
It depends on pricing. If it's only a few hundred dollars and they offer lifetime job placement then it's worth it.
Well you have to have pouring experience. Most places want you to have a year. It's good to go if you have time and money for it so you can learn the ropes and feel comfortable doing it. The way I learned how to pour was partying. My bestfriend is a bar manager and I can get a job at any bar I want. I often pour for her when she's bartending. At a school you can learn how to count out ounces for drinks and all that, but you can also learn it from a book. If you want to get your foot in the door you may need the certificate behind you if you don't have someone credible to vouch for your experience. I would say it could be a good idea.

good luck and happy pouring! Is bartending school a bad idea???
I think its a good idea if you already have a "Day Job."

if this is your only means of obtaining a good job, then it would be good. it would also come in handy as a second jobIs bartending school worth the money?
The range is from very low to very high.
It really depends on the bartending job you land

    Authentic bartending school?

in edison nj is it legit. i want to bartend part time... does anyone have any feedback on that school in Edison NJ and do you get paid good?Authentic bartending school?
First, many bartenders get paid well and a few get paid very well. Just a few get poor cash. It will depend on your interpersonal communication, bartending, and business skills. It also depends on where and what type of establishment you work at.

I have not nor will I attend a bartending school. But I view them as a fast track to your career. You may wish to ask for a few of its graduates and interview them on the job site. Also ask a few bars what they think about bartending schools in general. In all not too bad an idea. Be careful of the costs.

    Good luck...Authentic bartending school?
I attended Authentic Bartending School and it was most cheap out of all the others in the area. They worked with me to have a flexible payment plan and when I completed the course they helped place me in a top notch bar that fit my personality and desires. I would highly recommend the school.

Can I get bartender training at a restaurant instead of a school?

I want to make money this summer and the rest of this winter break so that I don't have to work during the school year because it's getting annoying frankly. I'm 19 so I'm old enough to bartend in Colorado. Can I just get training at a restaurant by working there instead of going to a bartending school? Can I get bartender training at a restaurant instead of a school?
Do you guys really have bartending schools? I would personally have thought that working in a restaurant serving drinks would be better experience if I were looking for an employee. Can I get bartender training at a restaurant instead of a school?
Do not waste your money on Bartending school. I have been bartending for 10 years and never NEVER needed it. If a restaurant is willing to train you, then I suggest you jump at that chance. Sometimes you will need to be a sever before they will train you, so make sure you pay close attention to what the bartenders are doing. Ask questions (at the appropriate times) and make sure that your managers know that you want to bartend. If they see you paying attention and striving to get there, chance are they will be more motivated to promote you and get you trained.

Once you have the experience, you can go anywhere!!Can I get bartender training at a restaurant instead of a school?
going to bartending school is a waste of time, i worked as a bartender in restaurants and nite clubs and people that came in to apply with training from bartending schools were laughed at. get a job as a waiter at a restaurant and get promoted to the bar, it is the best way.

anyway, you probably wont get a job as a bartender until you are 21, unless you are a really hot girlCan I get bartender training at a restaurant instead of a school?
I agree that bartending school is a complete waste of your time and money. Most restaurants will not hire someone because of their 'schooling'. You're better to start in a serving or other position and work your way into it. In many restaurants, there is a waiting list to get those positions, because they're generally pretty lucrative.

Are there any good bartending schools in Tampa?

I'm trying to find reviews online and a lot of people are saying that they have poor schools. I'm hoping to find someone with personal experience that will tell me a good school honestly. Thank you.Are there any good bartending schools in Tampa?
I know three people who took bartending courses this past year. the ABC Bartending School on Kennedy was excellent, they really learned how to do the job and they assist with placement, the problem is there are no jobs. Two were good looking young men and the third was a beautiful woman. The only one able to find a job was one of the men who took a job in Tallahassee. the other young man told me only women could get a job, but the woman was also unable to get a job in the Tampa area. The problem is there are no jobs so if you only have the school and not years of experience you are not going to get a bartending job in Tampa at this time. Take a course to be a CNA and you will have lots of job offers.

I was wanting to become a bartender and i was wondering if it is a good idea to go to bartending school or not?

Well it is not a bad idea. You should check and verify if they provide job placement to help make the cost worthwhile. Otherwise self-study and on the job training is a better way to go. If you want to make a good leaving without growing old behind a bar earn a college degree in Hospitality %26amp; Beverage Management. Any and all training/education, if marketed well by yourself, is always helpful.I was wanting to become a bartender and i was wondering if it is a good idea to go to bartending school or not?
It looks good on a resume and if you can get a bartending job while still learning, you get the best of both worlds. They should not only teach you to mix drinks, but how to interact with customers and how to deal with drunks. Good luck!I was wanting to become a bartender and i was wondering if it is a good idea to go to bartending school or not?
Before you go to bartending school, I suggest you read "So Ya Wanna Be A Bartender". It gives you a quick 30 page review of what they teach you in bartending school in 3 weeks. The best part is, it's free.AND it has over 100 mixed drink recipes and ideas for landing that first bar-job.I was wanting to become a bartender and i was wondering if it is a good idea to go to bartending school or not?
I can't recommend against bartending school, but my best advice is to visit lots of good bars and talk with and observe experienced bartenders. Then apply for any and all bartending jobs until you get one. If the bar has server positions available instead try that for a while to get your foot in the door.

  • Is bartending a good way to overcome shyness?

actually i'd like to ask actual bartenders this question. i'm thinking of going to bartending school mainly to learn how to be more social. can this be a big help?Is bartending a good way to overcome shyness?
bartending is a job, shyness is a mental state. You have to figure out, what it is that makes you feel that way, and deal with it. Trying to force yourself into something you may not be ready for could lead to complete failure, and distrust for life.

If you are afraid of what people think about you, forget it, they have so many hang ups about their selves, they find it easier to throw it at someone they don't know.

If your ashamed of what you look like, who the hell cares? Go outside, sit on th stoop, and watch people who walk by, take a look at them, a good look, and see if you see anyone who looks perfect. The answer will always be no, we all have our flaws.

If your afraid of being told no, guess what your not alone, nearly 98% of people are afraid of that word, but you know what? It has never killed anyone! It may hurt from a minute, but you get over it, and move on.

Get to work on finding out what is making you shy, and conquer it yourself.

Is bartending a good way to overcome shyness?
Yes it can help you because it forces you to engage with different people all the time, but having said that if your a shy person then that may make things worse cos you have to be friendly and fun, not just put your head down and pour people their drinks, know what I mean.

Where can you get a grant for a bartending school?

Should I persue a college career in Bartending?

    Hello!

Well, I've been going on and off about being a bartender normally because of my bills, personal issues, transportation issues for the past 3 years. Also, over those years when I've expressed the want to those I've gotten weird looks and people telling me stuff like women have it bad, you don't need bartending school, etc etc.

I want to know how good bartending really is. I hear the commericals on the radio (Texas School of Bartending) saying that there is so much money to be made in the summer time, good hours, good pay, etc.

One reason I'm looking into it is because I need a better paying job than what I have now (grocery store at $7.50, which is good, but I they won't give me part time hours), and also because I like cooking a lot too, and for some reason mixing drinks fascinates me.

If anyone could just tell the goods and the bads about it, and if it's a good idea, I would appriciate it greatly.Should I persue a college career in Bartending?
Bartenders do make some fat cash. It's a good job, if a little stressful and hard on your feet.

You do not need bartending school, however. I've known a lot of bartenders, (I waited tables for six years) and none of them went to school for it. They all worked their way up, either from waitstaff, or from barback. (The person who opens beer bottles and washes glassware.

I hesitate to say anything bad about bartending school, because I'm sure they do job placement and other things that might be beneficial, but I hate to see you waste tuition money on training for a job that doesn't really require a degree.

EDIT: Ah, I see what you meant now that you added the additional details. You may have to work your way up, but I think you should go for it. It will definitely be better than the grocery store.Should I persue a college career in Bartending?
Any application that I get from a Bartending School "grad", goes straight to the trash can. To learn the trade, you have work your way up. The best way to learn is to either Cocktail or Bar-back. This isn't truck driving school. Alot of responsibility, anybody can pour a drink, not everybody understands whats behind that drink. Good luck!Should I persue a college career in Bartending?
u need a college degree for bartending? wow. does cleaning woman need a college degree in cleaning too?Should I persue a college career in Bartending?
I worked as a bartender for a few years and it can be a really great job- cool people and lots of money!! But I wouldn't go to bartending college. A lot of bar owners would rather have someone who has no training than bartending college because they like to be able to teach you how to do it their way rather than have you come in thinkin you know everything and unwilling to listen to their way. I had no exlperience when I started bartending and I learned how to make most drinks from the bartenders I worked with or the bartending bible or just the people ordering the drinks.

Tuition and required fees are reported for a full-time undergraduate student for the FULL academic year. A full academic year refers to the period of time generally extending from September to June; usually equated to two semesters or trimesters, three quarters, or the period covered by a four-one-four plan. Required fees include only charges that all full-time students must pay that are not included in tuition (e.g., registration, health, or activity fees.) It does not include optional fees (e.g., parking, laboratory use).

I can't find it on their website and I haven't been able to get a hold of them by phone.Tuition For Bartending School?
My recommendation to you would be SKIP it.

Bartending schools don't teach you really anything useful along the lines of actual mixing, interacting with patrons, and netting you a job. It's more of a techniques/free pouring introduction than anything else, and those are things you can learn on your own with a good DIY book...

But since that doesn't answer your question, here's your answer:

Looking for a bartending job in MA. Any advice for a person with no experience to get a job.?

I currently just graduated from bartending school and am having a hard time since everyone is looking for an experienced bartender. My interest is working in a nightclub environment but am willing to work in a bar/restaurant. I only want to do weekends but can't seem to find someone willing to take someone with no work experience. Helppp! Any tips for my resume or where to look?Looking for a bartending job in MA. Any advice for a person with no experience to get a job.?
I wasted my time and alot of money on one of those schools. They promised to place me in a job and supply me with insurance. Well, guess what? I spent 3 (yes three!!) months going on their stupid leads, bar after bar, and not one person hired me becuase I have no experience. I still have no insurance and they really put me in a bind by taking my money and leaving me with empty promises. The best you can do with what you have learned is entertain some friends at your house. Sorry. Another thing, no one is ever going to give you weekends because those are the busiest nights and those are for the veteran bartenders.Looking for a bartending job in MA. School with no experience?

You'll be lucky if you can land a catering gig.

Don't admit to going to school, get a job as a bar back and work your way up. No one hires bartenders especially for clubs.

    I have a question about bartending ?

I am currently in my first week of bartending school and I am learning alot and its seems to be going great. The course is 2 weeks and then there will be a final exam. Can someone out there tell me what the chance of getting a bartending job out of bartending school with absolutley no experience in the food and beverage industry ?I have a question about bartending ?
I regret to tell you this but you might be in for some disapointment. I totally agree with the person who recomended starting from the bottom but think from experience that I might be able to add a couple of thoughts. Sadly the biggest factor working against you is your gender. This might only apply to my own geographical region(NoCal) but even very experienced "male" bartenders have a hard time finding work as the trend of late seems to be hiring attractive, usually young women, often with little to no experience. Ive been pouring for 11 years, mostly college bars, and am fortunate to be employed, but I personally know of some "bar-Gods" with skills and game that find themselves overlooked for "hotties" with no talent. It is no Joke when I tell you that while training one of these young ladies, I was onced asked what goes in a Jack and Coke. My best advice would be to see if you can withdraw from your course, possibly getting some of your money back and find a new career path. It is not as glamorous as many seem to think it is. Sorry if I have rained on your parade but your time and money is without question, better spent on other ventures.I have a question about bartending ?
Try a local 'mom and pop' type bar. They are usually more likely to hire a new grad.
Try a hotel, or a restaurant. Busy nightclubs and bars will not hire someone without actual behind the bar experience. Good luck.I have a question about bartending ?
Unless you're applying at a very high end restaurant or bar, any basic bar or most city chains will hire someone who knows their way around a barback and can make a drink without a Bartender's Bible.
I work in a local bar/restaurant at the moment and I'll level with you - you have got to start from the bottom and work your way up- UNLESS you have prior server experience. Most bartenders these days got their jobs because they know somebody. I'm guessing you don't, or else you'd already have a job. Go to a restaurant, get a server position and WORK YOUR *** OFF! Keep asking about a promotion to bar and you keep mentioning your schooling. Since no bar will hire you without experience, get about 3 months experience at a crappy local bar, then brag to new bars about how fast you moved up the chain at your local job. You may need to invest 6 months to a year into it, but it's better than 4-5 years of college!I have a question about bartending ?
ask the school, that's usually part of the fee, you've paid. you keep asking this, but you just don't seem to believe most of the advice from people in the industry. get a job as a server first, so you get familiar with the inner workings of restaurants/bars. then start as barback, and work your way up; there is really no quick fix, if you want to be successful.

What is a good way to get a job Bartending?

I currently have no experience in bartending, but am turning 18 soon, and would like to get a part time job as a bartender. I bought a couple of books on bartending. What advice would you give to someone in my position. Also, is bartending school worth the money? Thanks! What is a good way to get a job Bartending?
Bartending is a great way to earn money if you are cut out for it. Bartending schools, in my opinion, are a waste of time for most. Experience is king in this field and those schools do not count as experience. If you had experience waiting on tables and were being considered for a bartending job (without bar experience) you would have a better chance of getting hired than someone with a bartending school certificate and no server experience.

Contrary to what many think, mixing drinks is the easiest and last thing to concern yourself with. That comes fast and easy. Bartending is more about handling stress, multi-tasking, being quick with simple math in your head, a good small talker and just in general being efficient, friendly and trustworthy in a fast paced environment.

With that said, I would highly encourage you to get a waitering job or possibly a bar back position. Or you could try your luck at a local pub where it's generally slow. They sometimes will hire a likeable person with no experience if you show genuine interest to learn. From there the sky's the limit.

Bottom line is you've got to be able to handle serving people in a fast paced environment and all the "schooling" in the world won't help you. Owners want experience over education, hands down, everytime! Here's site with a lot of good reading for someone wanting to bartend or wait tables. Good Luck to you! http://earnbiggertips.blogspot.com/2009/鈥?/a>What is a good way to get a job Bartending?
You might have to start at the bottom of the totem pole if you want to become a bartender. Apply to be a dishwasher and mention to the employer that you want to move up to a bartenders position. I would suggest taking a mixology coarse, or even practice making mixed cocktails for your friends and family. You could even study 'how to mix cocktails' books, this will give you an understanding of what goes into certain drinks. Also go and get your smart serve certificate, you will for sure need this if you want to serve alcohol
most likely if you want to bartend anywhere take the course its wellllll worth it believe me a friends of mine got it and made that money back in a few nights some nights you make a whole lot on tips if you get a good weekend night and you can go anywhere to apply if you take the course totally worth it.What is a good way to get a job Bartending?
If you have no experience than I suggest that you take a bartending course that's what I did. Bartending school cost so much money. I checked into a bartending school here in Ft Myers Fl they wanted 600.00 for a 2 week class. Anyway, I was like you I wanted to bartend . A friend of mine recommend a bartending course bartendingexposed.com .I ordered the course or 37.00. I studied the course/book. And when I felt confident I applied for jobs. I am now working at a neighborhood bar in Cape Coral Fl. Anyway everyone said on yahoo answers that bartending school is a rip off. All I can say is that if it wasn't for the course/book I ordered I wouldn't be bartending. I would recommend this bartending course/book to anyone and I do! You do need some kind of course and this one is a good one.Good luck hope this info was helpful.
I have been a bartender now for a year. I could of gone to a school but I ordered a course on line.It only cost me 37.00. I heard school is a waste of money. I am glad I didn't spend 500.00 for a school I know some people do But personally I ordered the course on line and I learned everything that I need to know. I like my job and I make great money. I just tuned 18 a year ago. I think you need a course then you dont feel lost when you start a job. Plus you learn your drinks. good luck . I ordered my course from bartendingexposed.comWhat is a good way to get a job Bartending?

Can you recommend a good bartending school in NYC? What experience did you have in that school?

An intern who worked for me studied at the New York Bartending School and said he had a great experience.

You should visit the school first, and compare it to The American Bartending School, which is only a few blocks away.

Site visits will help you decide between the two.

    Cheers!

What book would be the best book to study before going to bartending school?

Im going to a bartending school in the cities. Please noone say its not worth the time or money cause they offer job placement for life. Which is really nice. But what I wanna know is what book would be the best to start reading before I take the class so I can complete it faster over winter break. I want to learn now so when I get in there I can complete it without having to wait and study. Also if you can tell me which ones are important to study or give me a book that does so would be awesome. If you're in the US, you're going to need to get insured, which is crazy expensive, just so you know. You're liable for any damages incurred by the patrons you serve. I looked into doing something like this a while back and licensing and insurance made it virtually impossible.
There are many possible names you could use. If you want you're company to stand out why not try something classy and sexy all in one like:

How Do I pick up speed bartending?

Okay so I've been bartending for the past month 2 nights a week for 4 hours each but my manager says I'm still a little on the slow side. Any suggestions how I can p/u some speed bartending or will it just come with time. BTW this is my 1st bartending job right out of bartending school. How Do I pick up speed bartending?
Dont worry, you boss knows that this is your first bartending job out of bartending school right? If so, he is telling you (or letting you know) that you just need to improve your skills. You'll get better over time. That's how every job is. Practice makes perfect. Memorize the mix combos. Use abbreviations for your mixes! I know they taught you that in Bartend school right? If not, email me so I could help you with the abbreviations for your mixes. merky08@yahoo.comHow Do I pick up speed bartending?
Do you want this job? If so then you are in for some work. Bartending isn't easy.

You don't say why you are slow, are you letting yourself get to distracted? If so then you may want to minimize the conversations. Of course people want to talk to the bar keep, but if your friends are showing up, let them know that you are working. And sometimes you just have to tell the customer that you'll be back.

If you are having trouble with the mixed drinks, then you need to do some homework. Pick up a copy of the Bartender's Bible or other good book and memorize the cocktail recipes.

Of course you may just have trouble getting the hang of keeping it all together and that just comes with time.

There are a lot of bartending schools out there and people with experience, so if you didn't have potential your boss would replace you.

    Good luck!

What should be worn to a bartending job interview? And what can you expect to wear after your hired?

The teacher at bartending school said black pants and a white shirt to the interview. Is there any type of bar where you will not get hired for showing up in this? What should be worn to a bartending job interview? And what can you expect to wear after your hired?
it all depends on what the bar is like. at the bar i go to the bartenders can wear whatever they want to. most of the girls wear mini skirts and some kind of t-shirt that does't cover their breasts or stomachs, and they're all ugly. the guys wear jeans and t-shirts or polos. maybe you should go to the bar you are interviewing at as a patron and see what the bartenders are wearing. i would go semi-dressed up atleast in case they do expect you to wear more professional clothing. What should be worn to a bartending job interview? And what can you expect to wear after your hired?
Your whites and blacks are perfect for an interview. It shows professionalism. Then during the interview you can ask what the standard dress code will be. But it's always best to look sharp and not like you wandered in off the street.
You won't get hired in most any bar wearing that.... really. If it was bar where that is not the outfit you would look pretencious and that wou expect to be more upscale.A verzion of black and white is the most common in mid to upscale bars but yours might not be just right the right thing, cut or style. They might like the bartenders to show up in a super crisp shirt and if it wrinkles while working, OK. You do the same with a shirt for an interview and it will look terrible in 10 minutes. Basically if you show up in that outfit anywhere it would be like wearing a TGIFridays uniform to an interview before you even have the job.

Wear something business casual. Dockers or a nice pair of pants. A collared shirt and a tie if it is a nice place. The interview is about your personality..... not some basics you learned in school. Shake hands look people in the eye and be confident this is the key. Not the resume that the school made you make highlighting applicable skills. Its people skills. Your job is to get any bar job and then you will start to make contacts and have a reference. Usually the best place for this if you did the school is a hotel or something.

The best thing in the whole world is to visit that bar anonymously a few nights before. Look around and see what is up. You will be better prepared. What should be worn to a bartending job interview? And what can you expect to wear after your hired?
That's the first thing that came to mind--the black pants and white shirt.

I can't imagine not being hired for wearing that combo to the interview. If the establishment has a dress code, you will be instructed what to wear.

I was a bartender for many years. The only place where I had a "uniform" was a golf shirt with the business name on it. Other than that, I worked in the good old jeans and t-shirt places.

Good luck...it's a great job, have fun.
at any interview black pants and white blouse is the appropriate attire. it shows authority. listen to your teacherWhat should be worn to a bartending job interview? And what can you expect to wear after your hired?
This depends on what kind of establishments you are applying to. I've had many bartending jobs and tend to wear all black. A nice place: wear a black sweater or blouse and black pants, a club wear a black shirt and a tank
I always show up in what I would wear to the job. But if your teacher said black pants, white shirt then best go with that.

How do I get a job bartending with no experience?

I already went to bartending school, but I'm finding it hard to get a job.How do I get a job bartending with no experience?
Most bars hire from within so your chances of starting as a bartender are pretty slim. Most places you will have to start out as a bar back or server to get started. Don't worry about it too much because turn over is pretty high in the business. I have a friend that started out in the same position that you are in, he actually worked at Perkins for a year to learn the customer side of the business. Now he is head bartender/bar manger at a 5 star restaurantHow do I get a job bartending with no experience?
I got a job in bartending without experience by saying I did have experience. I was living in NYC at the time and said my experience was from when I lived in Kansas because I knew they would actually check.

Learn how to make drinks either from a bartending school or by studying some books.

Usually when people order a drink, they ask for it by what's actually in the drink. For example they'll say "rum%26amp;coke" or "Maker's on the rocks"

The most common mixed drink that actually requires some skill is the Martini. Know how to make a Martini and you're set.

The absolute best way to make a Martini...

    1) pour about a half a shot of dry vermouth in the shaker. Swirl the vermouth around to kind of coat the sides. Then dump out the vermouth.

    2) fill shaker with ice.

    3) start to pour vodka (or gin) for 4 seconds. This should measure out 4 ounces.

    4) cover shaker with top or glass or whatever they are using.

    5) Shake it up like hell for at for about 10 seconds.

    6) Strain immediately into a Martini glass in front of patron (if done correctly you'll see an awesome thin layer of ice crystals that should impress the person who ordered it. Note that if you let it set, the crystals will disappear quickly.

    7) Drop in a fat olive on a stick or toothpick or fancy sword.

Also, you should have a reference book. Many time when I would be asked for a drink I didn't know I would duck behind the counter like I was looking for something but would actually be looking up how to make the drink. How do I get a job bartending with no experience?
You may be to young. Most bar people want someone with some experience. Trying doing private parties. Run an ad and see if you can some experience this way. Just watch out for bachelor parties. Try a wedding or retirement party. How do I get a job bartending with no experience?
Did you check with your school to see if they'd be willing to place you at a bar?

It is also a matter of lowering your standard. I found a lot of bartenders I know started off as servers at the bar/restaurant. Got to know the atmosphere and dropped the hint that they know how to bartend and was given that position in time. Or you have to start at a relatively unappealing bar.

How can my mom get a bartending job in clarksville, tn or in surrounding areas?

My mom went to a bartending school in Nashville. Both my dad and I tried to talk her out of it because it cost so much. It took her a while to get certified, but now that she is no one will hire her. The places that she applies to ask for her experience, but how can she get it without starting somewhere? Also, I love my mom, but she's not Barbie. Is her continued effort in this worth it, or is she going to end up disappointed and jobless? How can my mom get a bartending job in clarksville, tn or in surrounding areas?
    That depends on her.

In a down economy, it is tougher for anyone to find a job. Those that find work will be the ones that don't take the first no as the answer, and continue to go back, week after week, until the owner gives them a chance.

The days of going out and filling out 5 apps and getting a job are nearly over.

And, let's be honest, if she does nothing, what will her results be? Unemployed and disappointed. If she looks, she may get the same result, but she might just get a job.

All I know is that if you do nothing, you get nothing. Jobs do not fall out of the sky.

Good luck to her.How can my mom get a bartending job in clarksville, tn or in surrounding areas?
It depends on the owner(s) and/or sometimes looks do some good, however, there is a good chance she will end up disappointed.

Should I invest my money to go to San Francisco bartending school?

I just turned 21 and wanted to seek a different job position that would hopefully pay more than what I do as a math tutor. I am now in my senior year and want to improve on my customer service skills. I do not know whether I should invest my time and money to go to SF bartending school, because I have this fear of not being able to compensate for my investment, as I am already in a tight budget. I would like to know if any body has ever invested their time and money and actually found a job to make up for their investment. If their is an alumni from this program or any other like it, please give me some advice and pointers as to how I can be successful or at least find this school to be the best place to enroll at.Should I invest my money to go to San Francisco bartending school?
Don't waste your money - it won't help your customer service skills and you will be making drinks using colored water. No bar considers going to bartending school a plus. They want experience and a good personality. You may have to start as a bar back or cocktail waitress.

Bottom line, bartending school is a joke and none of them can truly help you find a job because restaurants and bars aren't going to them for referrals because they think they are a joke too,

Sorry for the reality check hon - just trying to keep you and your money in the same place.Should I invest my money to go to San Francisco bartending school?
Find out if bartending school is even a requirement for the job. It might be better to invest in a class that is similar in management, but covers more area (a basic management class). So if the bartending thing doesn't work (you may just need to buy a book on bartending...) then you will have other options.Should I invest my money to go to San Francisco bartending school?
Don't go. I am a bartender and a Restaurant manager. I have also worked as a night club manager in Miami Beach, and I never seen any one get hired from going to bar tending school. I used to get a bunch of people coming in to apply telling me that they have there bar tending license, I then tell them that in the State of Florida you don't need 1. They usually get upset knowing they spent up to $2000 for a worthless piece of paper. But if your state requires a license, you don't need to go to school to take it. You can call you local state license board, and get more information on it. As far as drinks and service go, your best bet is to work in a restaurant, many corporate places usually hire from with in and make one of the waiters a bartender giving them free training. Another idea would be to try to get a job as a bar back. You would just helping out the bar tender by getting ice, stocking and some times making drinks. I started out this way when i was 19. They tip you out at the end of the shift and you also get paid from the place too.Should I invest my money to go to San Francisco bartending school?
I've worked in the restaurant business for over 30 years and I've only met one person who actually went to bartending school. 99% of the people who are bartenders start out as restaurant servers and get to know about drinks by serving them to the guests. Once you know more about what goes in to a drink, you can start to make them.

Go to the book store and get a good, basic bartender's guide. Study it while you're working as a server at a place like Applebees, Chilis, TGIFridays, or any other big chain that will hire you to serve. Once you get some experience, let the manager's know you're interested in working behind the bar. Once you have bartender experience, you can try to get a job at a more upscale bar or restaurant. At that point, you will need know more about the actual types of alcohol (how it's made, etc) and you'll want to work on your wine knowledge as well.
Don't waste your money on a bartending school. Every, and I mean Every Restaraunt and Bar, look down on those bartending schools and the people who come from them. Your math skills are a bonus and are important when dealing with keeping the till perfect. This is coming from a guy who has bartended and have done the hiring in many bars and restaraunts for over 30 years. My daughter wanted to learn bartending, and I didn't have the time to teach her, but I did reccomend an excelent site, whereas she could get everything she needed to be proficient in the skill of bartending. She did get her first try at a job. It's important to realize that being sure of yourself is a good sign of a bartender. When I started years ago, my advice from another bartender was this. Know your drinks, know your customers, but more important bartending is 50% knowledge and 50% percent B/S. And that doesn't stand for bachelor of science degree. Take my advice check out this quick and cheap way to learn your secondary skill, which just might be a real career, as I have raised 3 girls, own a home, and have a happy marriage. I hope I was helpful, Oh, and by the way this is the site:bartendingexposed

Most employers will look at your clothing which should always be professional dress no matter what job while being at an interview. As long as you are wearing clean dress pants and a nice shirt, your body and hair are clean. ( do not wear a lot of perfume as it makes you look cheap) Carry yourself with confidence but not cockyness. Relax.... you will do fine. What should be worn to a bartending job interview? And what can you expect to wear after your hired?
not sure but if you find out email me.....cause im in bartending schoolWhat should be worn to a bartending job interview? And what can you expect to wear after your hired?
high end bars with richer clientele expect black pants and white shirt, but more relaxed atmosphere bars would be fine with nice jeans and shirt. go to the bar you think you'd like to work at (or all the ones) and see how they are dressed before your interview.

    National bartending school tuition?

Has anyone gone to national bartenders school in california? If so, what is the tuition? If you have been to a different bartender school can you please let me know the cost, the location and the name? Thank you.National bartending school tuition?
I thought since no one has answered you I thought I would. If you read yahoo answers which I have for a long time. Most people say that a bartending school is very costly and not worth the amount of money that they ask for 600.00- 900.00 for a 2 week course. I was like you I wanted to bartend had no experience . My friend recommend a bartending book/course I could down load and study. It cost me 37.00. I am going to FSU and I really needed a job that I could make some really good money to pay for my tuition and rent etc. I had heard about bartendingexposed.com from this site also . So I ordered it .I Studied the book and drinks until I felt confident enough to apply for jobs. I got a job at a local collage bar. I am making great money about 150.00 -200.00 a night plus a check. I personally am glad that I ordered this book it saved me so much money and I learned everything that I need to know about bartending, drinks, bar set up etc. Hey, good luck.Hope this info was helpful and hope it might save you a lot of money.

  • How can i find a bartending job?

i just went through two weeks of bartending school and i'm now coming to realize that it may have been a waste of money. i'm finding out i may have just wasted time and energy trying to learn about 100 drinks when i'll probably only have to ever make 25 or so of them.

does anyone have any tips of what kinds of places i should start to look for a job, how i should present myself, and what drinks i should be studying the most?

also, should i make copies of my little bartending school diploma and make cards with my information on them to leave at places even when they are not currently looking to hire?

    thanks.How can i find a bartending job?
I would never suggest anybody go to bartending school as I feel it's a waste of money unless you own the school in which case you clean up. Most of these places will teach you certain things like how to mix a drink, how to garnish and their version of popular drinks. Problem is, a lot of drinks out there are made differently depending on where the bartender learned to make them.

In my travels and my time behind the bar, I've seen a Long Island Ice Tea made 3 different ways, a B-52 shaken and served over ice and a Cocaine served as a shooter. In the end it's less about the drink and how they expect you to make the drink.

Now, I hate to be the one to break it to you but your chances of getting into a bartending job with no experience is low. It's not impossible if you can show you know your way around the bar and are adaptable. But unless you're some kind of superstar, or they use an "autobar" system (which means any monkey can push a button to "make" the drink) you're going to have to work at it or start working a service bar first.

A service bar is where the customers don't contact you directly and only the waitstaff deal with you. The pressure can be high, but you normally don't have 15 people trying to flag you down.

Your other option is to get a job as a barback and work your way up. You'll be cleaning glasses, fetching ice and making sure the bar is properly stocked for the bartender to do his or her thing. It's a thankless job but if you shine they might let you pull some draughts or line up some splits when it gets busy. How can i find a bartending job?
Well, nearly every restaurant has a bar... the trouble is, often trustworthy waitstaff get promoted to bartender, b/c the bar is where you can make or break a restaurant on it's profit and food (liquor) cost.

Off the top of my head, I'm thinking:

    Chili's

    Outback

    TGIF's

    Bennigan's

any chain steak house or Mexican chain

    privately-owned bars/clubs

You may also try working for catering companies, that provide a bar and bartender for private parties. if a customer at one of these ask for a card, discreetly give one, tell them you work "freelance" too.How can i find a bartending job?
Keep the bar-tending school to yourself. Check the want ads each week. It's easier, and less pressured, to get a job if you already have a job so you may just take anything at first. You will also get valuable experience. Or if you're out at a nice spot strike up a conversation with the manager to inquire if they are hiring.

Obviously you want to work somewhere that gets really busy since you work on tips. How can i find a bartending job?
Unless you have prior experience don't expect to become a bartender right away. It takes a lot more than just knowledge of drinks for a establishment to hire you.

I suggest looking for a barback job first. Basically it's a bartender's assistant who helps make drinks. You're more likely to get that kind of position with just going to bartending school.

    Keep practicing and good luck!
You may consider Bartending School a waste of your time and money.... at first. It wont really help you get any bartending jobs right away. However, it did give you the basics of being a bartender but it wont open doors for you just by itself.

ALL RESTAURANTS want experienced bartenders who already have been in the thick of it. Since you have yet to be employeed as a bartender it will be very difficult to get a job initially as one.

I would not even mention that you took the course on the applications or interviews it will probably hinder you more than it would help.

It would be along the lines of applying to an airliner as a captain since you flew flight simulators on your PC at home. Knowing how to make a drink is important but knowing how to prioritize, and handle situations, smoothly, effectively, and efficiently is what really makes a bartender. This cant be taught at a bartending school.

I've seen bartenders buried with 35-65 service bar tickets at one time. FYI 20 tickets is usually too much for one person to handle. So be prepared to grab your ankles if your in a high volume bar/restaurant.

Where you can get a bartending job is a slower "local" bar that isnt over the top busy that is privately owned. Franchised bars and restuarants will only hire within or form peaple that have mad experience behind thier ears.

If you really dont want to work at a local bar then apply as a bar back at a busier restaurant/bar. Buy a back brace you''ll need it. Work hard and fast and you can be a bartender in a few months and dont complain. Let them know your taking the bar back position to show that you are a "GREAT" worker and that your serious about becoming thier bartender.

If you dont want to bust your *** a few months and work long and hard dont become a bar back.

    So for a quick recap:

Small slower bars will higher ppl with less experience as bartenders.

99% of Corporate bars/restaurants promote thiers best employees to bartenders from within. Seek a bartender postioin first. When they say "no" seek a barback postion and work your butt off. After your hired for a few months and they "love" you as an employee remind them your here to be a bartender. A good time for this is roughly 2-3 months in.

And the only other way to get a bartender job is to be incredibly hot. Pretty much this factor only works for females.

They may have no bar skils at all and couldnt tell you whats in a rum and coke but they will bring in the boys which will bring thier wallets.

Take care of your regulars. Extend your hand to guests shake thier hands intro duce your slef and ask for thier names. Write thier names on thier check in no time flat you'll know what they like to drink and be calling them by name. They love that.

Every regular loves their fav drink waiting for them on the bar while they are walking in the door and a "Hey %26lt;Name%26gt;, long time"

Mosts love nicknames as well. At a bar use to regularly frequent, a supremely hot bartender use to write "Cutie" on my bar tab. I'd tip her insanely!!! Did I mention how hot she was? My other buddie was know as Johnny Bomber but thats another story.

So thats just a few insites from a guy whos been in this industry for 15 years. I've been everything from a dishwasher from age 15 to a Food and Beverage manager/Dept Head by the age of 20 for Marriott. Also have been expo, food runner, bartender, and server. Currently I'm 30 and still in the thick of our industry.

Is it a good idea for me to go to bartending school?

I am a college student and need cash (what college student doesn't?). I like the idea of bartending because I go to school at Penn State, where the student population is just over 40000, so there are a lot of bars and nightclubs. Also, I have heard you can pull in a few hundred bucks in a good night. I have read other questions on this site that ask the same question, but I am 18 - so I can't just go out and buy alcohol and begin mixing. It is the Pittsburgh Bartending School (www.pittsburghbartendingschool.com) and tuition is a little under 700. Thoughts? Is it a good idea for me to go to bartending school?
I think you will make that back in a week.

Plus, once you graduate, if you can't get a job right away you have something to fall back on.

Have fun!Is it a good idea for me to go to bartending school?
As a former restaurant manager we ALWAYS promoted our bartenders from within. The obvious exception was a new store opening. Bartending schools are a waste of time and money. If you are interested in the service industry a position as a server/bar-back/door host is the best way to gain the experience and knowledge. Sorry, the likelihood of landing a premium bartending job without experience is next to nil. Unless your uncle is opening a pub and needs some help I suggest you enter the industry at a different level. Best of luck!Is it a good idea for me to go to bartending school?
I'm with the Pittsburgh Bartender School http://www.bartendingschoolpittsburgh.com Right now we have between 70-80 local/regional bars/clubs etc. that will interview our students. That is current.

If you are looking to bartend in State Park, we probably offer the fullest description on how to get a bartending job anywhere. It is the result of our experiences (owning a bar, bar managers/bartenders--and interacting with thousands of employers over a couple of decades. We've looked at the best stuff on the web abt how to get a bartending job. It is more thorough. It is real.

Our program includes RAMP education which is great for PA bartending jobs and a national certification in Alcohol Mangement.

Now, I'm not going to debate the pros and cons of bartending schools or not. I will say though, if you are looking at schools check us out. We put a lot of hours into the actual job process. This isn't a guarantee...but it is an area where the Pittsburgh Bartender School and the others we operate are dramatically different from most bartending schools around the country.

Actually if you want to see results search in facebook for one of our different schools. Try Professional Bartending School DC (its a group not a page). check out the volume of people getting jobs in that one.

We will put up a facebook page shortly for Pittsburgh with similar stuff

Best of luckIs it a good idea for me to go to bartending school?
I was in the same situation as you. I was going to FSU in Fl. I saw the potential to make money at the collage bars where I was going to school. I decided that I needed to go to a bartending school. Well after checking into it ..the class offered in Ft Myers Fl would of cost me 600.00 for a 2 week course. I decided to stay at my parents and take a course that my friend recommend to me. I payed 37.00 for the bartending course at bartendingexposed.com I am so glad that I did not pay out all that money for a school. I studied the course/book . I studied... then I went out to apply for jobs in this area. I got a job at a neighborhood bar . By the way You don't have to go out and buy alcohol to learn how to bartend. And the schools use colored water. anyway it seems like you have made up your mind to go to a school. I just thought Id save you some money. Hey good luck I know you will do fine.
most bartenders consider it a waste of money

if you go to bar tending school, you likely will start a job anywhere and start as a barback/server and have to move up

if you start working at a restaurant/bar, you will likely start as a barback/serve and have to move up

one of these costs $700, the other doesn't.

chances of a bar hiring an 18 year old to bar tend, even if you went to school for it is unlikely, for liability reasons and technically you shouldn't even know what a drink tastes like, so how good could a 18 year old be at mixing drinks?

    Best bartending school in NYC????

Does anyone have recommendations for bartending schools in the Manhattan or Brooklyn area? Also does anyone know their approximate rates? I've been looking around on various websites but for some reason I can't find how much they charge for classes. Help is appreciated!!Best bartending school in NYC????
Do not waste your money on bartending school. Its a giant scam. 99% of bars and restaurants will hire from within or someone with a base clientelle and tons of experience. Just get a job as a server and express interest in tending bar... and stick with it.

How do I get my first bartending job?

A couple of years ago I went to bartending school and after I graduated I tried to get a bartending job and was told that people do not want to hire someone who only has bartending school experience. I am now interested in trying again to become a bartender since I need a second job, but I don't know what they are looking for or what I should say. I know the drinks and have continued to study new techniques, I just need to know how to secure a job.How do I get my first bartending job?
start as a cocktail server first, to get your foot in the door, and to expand your knowledge. then see, if you can work a few shifts as a barback, or relief bartender. don't mention, that you went to bartending school, it will count against you, as most places don't hire "graduates" from bartending schools.good luck! How do I get my first bartending job?
Depending on where you live try looking into the convention center as a temp. Also another friend of mine started out by working at a local performing arts center and doing private parties for people. I have also done private parties (catering) and once your name spreads by word of mouth its amazing.

Also try craigslist.org there are multiple oppurtunities on there. How do I get my first bartending job?
In my experience of 8 years in the restaurant/bar business, most restaurants only hire from within for their bartenders. They want someone who also knows the menu, and how the restaurant is run. I had 2 jobs where I was hired in as a bartender, one was in a chain restaurant and I was hired in right before they opened the restaurant. The other, I was hired in as service bar but got a strong referral from a friend that was also a bartender there. If you don't have experience, it may be hard to find a bar or restaurant that is willing to give you your first gig. As far as the bartending school goes, I've heard that story before. I had a friend go to bartending school in SC and was pumped full of fantasy about working in the nicest clubs in the area. All bogus. After he "graduated" he went to one of the places on ABC Bartending Schools job database and was laughed at to his face. They told him his info was wrong, that they would never hire anyone who's only experience was in bartending school. He tried to get his money back, but that never happened either. I think your best bet would be to find a restaurant and start from there. You may need to wait tables first to "get in" with management, but it might be your best bet.How do I get my first bartending job?
    Hi there,

As a manager of one of L.A.s biggest bars, here's my tips.

    # 1....Do not ,any time bring your resume to a manager during a lunch rush or any other busy time, you will be seen as a nusuance and the resume will probably end up in the trash.

#2 Hang out at the place you might want to be employed at,make friends with the bartenders, don't let them feel you are "competing"with them for the job. They may be able to steer you some place else and put in a good word for you.

#3Don't say that you've been to "bartending school".It doesn't really matter unless you want to tend at a corparate place. It also makes you sound out of the loop. Most people hiring bartenders want an "origanil",Make up a signatue drink that people love, name it something cathchy and just don't be too full of yourself until ,you get behind the bar.Always remember to respect your bar back, you'll need him in a busy bar.Good Luck///
Go for what ... gypsycricket said ... I'm a cert bartender and have had my own Concierge Lounge for Marriott Hotel.

What she said is the utmost truth and that's for sure. ~wink~

(I just fell in the Concierge Lounge thing, I never made a drink before that a day in my life, but since I learned hands on from that, if I wanted to work in a bar or a club I could) Go For It Girl ... You'll make crazy money in a gay bar (just my 2 cents) ... a friend of mine owns one of the Biggest gay bars in Ohio. (his bartenders rack up so much money, gay and straight, that they have pent houses, ETC and they only bartend.) ~Wink~

How do you get into bartending?

I've been checking for bartending jobs on Craigslist, and most of them say you need experience. Well how do you get experience in the first place? Is it necessary to go to bartending school? Or is there another way?How do you get into bartending?
Start at the bottom baby!!! If you can't get a gig behind the bar right away, try getting your foot in the door as waitstaff, or a bar back. Keep you head in the books on your off time, and make sure the boss man knows you have a great interest in bartending. (It dosen't hurt to show some hard work and a great sense of humor either.) Or you could try getting a gig at a beer only bar (anyone can pop caps) Then just brush up on your drink making skills (I recomend home testing). Then you've automaticaly got the word "bartender" on your resume...voila....experience. Plus working at a beer bar will get you accustomed to the fast pased part of the job, then when you start mixing, you'll be more chill!!!How do you get into bartending?
Take a community college bar tending course first then apply at the bars you are interested. If you are a hot woman it is easy , if you are a man you might have to be very entertaining as well as good looking to get a job in a good bar.
From experience...I bartended for 5-6 years and the way "in" is from the bottom. In my area (Dallas,Texas) graduates of the "XYZ Bartending academy " work at hotel bars and tourist destinations...both have huge turnover and do not offer the best tipping clientel.

I started at the bottom as a porter (waitstaff helper and floor sweeper) and worked my way up through attrition to barback (bartender's halper and ice fetcher) after a few months. Showing up on time and ready to work made me a favorite of management, and asking for extra shifts made me a favorite of other barbacks...I suggest you do the same.

After I found a couple of bartenders that I worked with well, I asked them to show me the ropes. Once they were confident in my abilities they helped me petition management for a bartending shift or 2 each week, or to let me "fill in" or be "on call" for any bartending opportunity.

In less than a year I want from an overdressed busboy to a real live bartender. I earned money the whole time, I learned the local standard mixes (not what is always in "the book"), and I had a clientel that recognized me and tipped well.

After a full year behind the bar I looked for other bartending jobs, and because I had verified experience, they were plentiful.

If you are prepared to start at the bottom and be loyal to the place that gives you the opportunity, you can do very well.

Eventually you will get tired of wet shoes and horrible hours...but you have a long way to go before that happens.

Good luckHow do you get into bartending?
Some smaller places will train you on the job with no experience so you can get the experience. And do a lot of reading up on drinks. Meanwhile, get yourself into a bartending class so you can move up to a better job since you'll have the experience to go along with it. So it won't be just book knowledge, but hands on too.
I would take a bartending course. If I remember correctly, it's only $200 and only a weekend long. It will help you get a job because you need to know all the different types of drinks and the basics on how to make them. How do you get into bartending?
It's definately not required to go to bartending school....but you can...though it costs money.....lot's of jobs will train you....and bartending is easy once you know what your doing

Pros and cons of bartending school?

    pros :

*you learn the ins and outs of the profession and the savoir faire for the really special stuff.

*you get something nice to start your resume if you want to start in swanky establishments

*you get to know some interesting people

    cons:

*It is probably useful only if you want to work in an upscale establishment. Most of what you'll learn about all manners of unusual alcohol types and brands and cocktail mixing isn't likely to be useful in a basic neighborhood bar.Pros and cons of bartending school?
It depends on the job you are looking for - I used to be a bartender and I can tell you that I have never met anyone in the industry who actually went to bartending school - we all started out as waiters or waitresses, then became barbacks, and eventually bartenders. If you want to jump immediately into an upscale bar or the employer requires the school - go for it.

If you can get a job without going to the school and learn by experience, this is probably the best option - I say this because bartending school can be expensive and you won't learn (or remember) anything that you can't be taught in a few nights behind the bar - once you are taught the techniques and the basics about alcohol, you will develop a 'bank' of knowledge on how to make drinks (and unless you have a fantastic memory, you won't get this out of bartending school) - anyhow, just my $.02, if the price is right and you would be more comfortable in that type of learning environment (as opposed to the sink or swim method) then it might be worth more to you.

Best of luck!Pros and cons of bartending school?
    Pros:

You learn how to make all kinds of drinks.

You can earn some good tips

You can meet a lot of interesting/attractive people

    Cons:

Losers will tell you their sob stories

You spend all night in a bar, usually breathing second hand smoke.

You can get crappy tips and go home with almost nothing.

You meet a lot of ugly rude and obnoxious people, who then proceed to get drunk and really start to shine!Pros and cons of bartending school?
There is no real bad reasons or issues with attending a school to learna nything, I was a chef for 20 yrs, I went back to do my Culinary Management course in 1987, 7 yrs after doing my apprenticeship and having been a sous chef in 3 operations already.

I was in school with people just out of high school and soemthat were changing profession, the only con maybe the tuition costs and the available jobs in your area, but a fully trained professional bartender is more of a hireable person that someone who has just been a beer slinger.Pros and cons of bartending school?

Whats the best online bartending school?

I agree with the above answer. I don't know a single person who has a bartending certificate who has gotten a job bartending. And every bartender I know have not been to bartending school.

Also, do pick up a drink dictionary but one site that did teach a few important things was: http://totallyfreebartending.com/

Some things that a book won't tell you: Never mix a drink on the bar (the guest can get too critical,) never leave a bottle sitting on a bar and drinks with a carbonated liquid added should not be shaken. (You would never shake a can of soda/pop.)

You can kinda skip their daily process thing and just adjust the number in the url:

(just change the number, the lessons go up to 16)Whats the best online bartending school?
Buy a drink dictionary. You'll save tons of money. Bars don't care if their employees took bartending classes. They hire people who can multi-task and have great customer service skills.

Do you really need to go to bartending school to bartend?

Thinking of picking up a 2nd job as a bartender at night, there's all these bartending courses, but I mean, I'm 28, I was a waiter in college, and I know how to make all the basic stuff, vodka cran/orange/whatever, all the basic shots, how to layer over a spoon, pour from a tap, etc. Other than memorizing drink recipies it seems like you'd learn most of it from working, and I'd rather not shell out 400 bucks and spend several weeks going.

How much do you really learn from a bartending school that you couldn't just pick up from working or memorizing shots on your own? Thanks.Do you really need to go to bartending school to bartend?
Unless the State or Bar you want to work at demands it... it's USELESS !!

I bartended during college, while off-duty in the Navy, and still fill in at the local bar and NEVER went to bartending "school".

My BEST recommendation is to by a Bartender's Bible or Handbook... or "Bartending for Dummies" and practice at home. Better still... find a small local bar and offer your services FREE in exchange for training.

GOOD LUCKDo you really need to go to bartending school to bartend?
no but in many states you do have to have a license. It is usually just a alcohol awareness class.Do you really need to go to bartending school to bartend?
No. Go to any bar and this is very obvious

Is it a good idea to go to bartending school?

OK...i want to go to bartending school but i also want to know if it is worth it.I have felonies so it it hard for me to get a job else where.i want a bartending job so i can just work the weekend at one of hot spots in my area. i do have previous experience as a waitress and working in restaurants just not with bartending.i am waiting for my income tax check to come and then i plan on paying 695.00 to go. Do you think that it would be woth it?Is it a good idea to go to bartending school?
As we've said on here a thousand and one times, unless your state requires that you go to bartending school, it's a waste of money.

I have never worked at a club or restaurant that will hire someone straight out of bartending school. Instead, most restaurants have you work your way up, learning the drinks as you go.

Memorizing a drink book, handing pressure, and getting along with guests are what you need.Is it a good idea to go to bartending school?
No, idiotic idea. Just get a job at a restaurant bar that doesn't get much business, learn via that, and move upward using prior experience as qualifications.

Experience trumps education 100% of the time.Is it a good idea to go to bartending school?
FOR A RECOVERING ALCOHOLIC NEEDING JOB? NOIs it a good idea to go to bartending school?
If you have felonies it might be hard for you to get a job serving alcohol whether you go to school or not-- just throwing that out there. Why don't you try to get another job and lose the idea that you could live your entire life just working on weekend nights-- that isn't realistic and the "hot spots" aren't going to be the ones willing to hire you and the places that hire you will be putting you on the crappy weekday/weeknight shifts for awhile. You have to work your way up anywhere you go.

Bartending isn't 'fun' - it has it's moments, but it can be hard, stressful and a lot of work. No reputable place hires people from 'schools'.

I know you probably spent a bunch of money on culinary school and have a huge student loan to pay off.

Don't feel bad if you have the opportunity to take a line cook job. Believe me, that's a better place to start than thinking you are going to be on a scene of the movie "Cocktail". Because it's not going to happen.

It really irritates me that this whole 'cooking scene" has made people think they can become 'chefs' when there is much more than that. You have to have the 'bug' in the first place and can become a chef with no schooling at all.

Why is it that people say bartending school is a waste of Time and Money?

I am a professional bartender and I love it! It was one of the best decisions I have ever made ...learning mixology the way it was intended working only the busiest nights not serving or barbacking walking straight in and making my money only on the busiest nights. I just hear of many young great minds that want to bartend that they deprive themselves of all the drinks that blow people away by not learning professionally. Awww bourbon and cokes ...vodka and cranberrys wow how is that bartending I just told you what was in it. Let me get a Mai Tai or a Zombie or a Russian Qualude drinks that most people have never tried or given a chance that are great! So lets keep depriving the US of all the great drinks a bartender could make and say aww hell just work your way up be a barback settle for less or serve food ....ok We just turned our best server into our worst bartender... Also consider how much money each week you lose doing that! I just think people should learn customer service and professional bartending the right way in a controlled environment make all your mistakes at the school so when you get out in the real world there is no room for mistakes! This is the type of business where the players play or we could be just another POS average bartender that deprives me or you of all the drinks alchol has to offer! Why is it that people say bartending school is a waste of Time and Money?
The best thing about bar tending school is the placement afterwords. Myself I stared by hanging around a dive bar and getting to know everyone, after a while i asked the owner if i could work there and since I gained the trust of every one in the bar from bartenders to costumers he let me try it out since 1984 I have been bar tendingWhy is it that people say bartending school is a waste of Time and Money?
i bar tended for many years and loved itWhy is it that people say bartending school is a waste of Time and Money?
I've been talking to a mate this week who has a friend making very good money bartending; he learnt off two great bartenders, and whilst he's not excellent himself, he knows a lot and can still prepare a mean drink, so working those busy nights in London does him well... Equiv. of appx. $65k USD a year just by working busy nights; no small time stuff.

I think it's a skill that serves well. Erm, no pun intended...

Should I go to bartending school since I have no restaurant/bar experience?

I'm 24 yrs old, right now I live in upstate NY I plan on moving out of state within the year. So the question is...Should I spend 300 bucks on bartending school here in upstate NY? I have no restaurant/hospitality experience at all. Just customer service/retail, and some office work. I'd probably have a little better chance of becoming even a barback if I plan to relocate somewhere like Hawaii or CA? Just any suggestions would be appreciated. I know these days are not only what you know but WHO you know. lol.Should I go to bartending school since I have no restaurant/bar experience?
    Short answer: Probably not.

Long answer: Bartending school is an excellent way to learn how to pour precise measures of alcohol and learn the most popular drinks. However, there's nothing that they can teach you that you wouldn't be able to learn at home with a few good recipe books and a bottle of water with a pour spout.

In addition, a certificate from a bartending school just isn't likely to translate to a bartending job. Almost anybody can learn how to pour drinks. Bar managers are looking for reliability and personality above all else.

It would probably be a good idea to get yourself TIPS certified, if you're able to afford it. A lot of bars won't even consider you unless you have that certification. It's easy to get and doesn't require any knowledge of drinks, but having it will make you a lot more marketable as an employee.

In most cases, barbacking is an excellent introduction to bartending, and most barbacks will eventually go on to become bartenders. However, and I hate to say this, most places simply will not hire a woman as a barback. It's not a sexist thing, honestly. Barbacks often have the most physically demanding job in the restaurant. Full kegs can weigh up to 160 pounds and buckets of ice can easily weigh 50 or 60. As a barback, you'll be expected to lift both of these, and most women just don't have the kind of strength to do that for a 8+ hour shift.

Even after six years of working as a bartrender, I still cannot move a full keg. I will probably never be able to.

I will give you a bit of advice, though. When I decided that I wanted to start working as a bartender, I too had no experience in the service industry. I started asking server friends of mine which restaurants were most likely to promote bartenders from within and found myself a job as a server. In my experience, chain restaurants [ugh] are the most likely to have a clear-cut path to promotion and once you have bartending experience there, you'll be much more marketable to hipper places.

Restaurants are more likely to hire a server with no experience because that job is much easier to train for. If you make it clear during your interview that you're interested in learning how to bartend, they'll likely keep that in mind in the future. Just make sure to be an excellent and professional server and you'll be at the top of the list when a bartending job opens up.

I worked my a** off waiting on tables and went from absolutely no restaurant experience to full-time bartender in about six months. It's not that difficult if you prove yourself to be a valuable employee.Should I go to bartending school since I have no restaurant/bar experience?
If you can afford the $300 and the school has a history of placing people, it should be a good investment.

But check them out by asking bar owners what they think of the school.Should I go to bartending school since I have no restaurant/bar experience?
Well there is a website that is offering free online courses. Maybe you can check that out first before spending $300 on a bartending school. The website is here http://tinyurl.com/4ksg6rb
