I am in Charlotte NC and I was a bartender for 8+ yrs. The best and most sought after bartenders always were the most successful waiters first. If you really want to be a bartender start by waiting tables and do a good job and always leave your section absolutely perfect. Also start reading the paper everyday, it will give you something to talk to your customers about.
The places I worked and made the most money would not even talk to someone with only bartending school experience. Plus there are only about 10 drinks that you need to know.
