I want to look into becoming a bartender, should I go to bartending school? Is it necessary?

Generally going to bartending school is not necessary. However, many places do only hire people who have attended because they are well acquainted with many different types of cocktails, glasses, liquors, liqueurs, and other bartending essentials.

A lot of people seem to ask this question, and I've found an article that discusses what you need to know when thinking about becoming a bartender. You should definitely check it out...it's got some good pointers.

I did go to bartending school, and it was a waste of money. If you want to get on the fastrack to becoming a bartender, I'm not going to tell you to start at the bottom (barback), like some people may advise. There is a better way.

1) First get certified to serve alcohol from your state ($25 - $40, a 4 hour course followed by a test).

2) NEXT, look up who the biggest catering companies are in your city.

3) Give them a call, tell them you are certified and ask when their next wedding/event/private party it.

They always need people and it's mostly 1099, so they aren't as harsh about making a long term commitment. For more tips on getting a good bar job and making lots of money doing it without going to bartending school, waiting tables, or filling out tons of applications, see the resource box. If you want to get a job bartending, you should probably consider bartending school. While you can learn all you need to know from a book, but most bars won't hire you unless you either have experience or have completed a bartending course. If you know people in the industry that can get you a job, just grab a book and get behind the bar. If not, take the course. Most courses offer job placement at the end.

I know near me there are a few bars that have affiliations with local bartending schools and won't hire someone if they haven't completed the bartending course.
I didn't go to bartending school and I was a bartender for many years when I was young. I don't think it is neccessary unless you intend to work at a place where the bartenders are the main focus. Most people order pretty basic drinks, and there are so many books and websites to find recipes now. I want to look into becoming a bartender, should I go to bartending school? Is it necessary?
I barrowed this answer but it is good for you.

If you are in the USA I believe that no states or cities require a bar-tending certification. Many private trade schools offer training as a bartender but I have been told it is just as easy to get a job as a bar-back and train on-the-job or On-Job-Training (OJT). Purchase a book on bartending coupled with a job you can learn the trade fairly quickly.

These my help you with general knowledge and to market yourself for a bartend position.

i think its a waste of money. i would just get a good drink book and learn to make all the popular drinks. then find a job bartending. with little experience you could prob get a job with a catering company or lower end restaurant. then once you've got some bartending on your resume, you can work up to a better bartending gigI want to look into becoming a bartender, should I go to bartending school? Are you serious? I didn't even think there were classes you could take. All you need to know is who drinks what and how to make it. It's not really that hard and there is nothing to really study up on.
ABSOLUTELY !
