Is bartending school really necessary to become a bartender?

As an experienced bartender, I would have to say no. My reasons being, I didnt have to go to a bartending college, I learned by doing and being taught by another bartender. I have also trained many people to make drinks and bartend in my 9 years as a bartender. I have not heard anybody give positive feedback after attending bartending "schools". In my opionon, they could do no harm, but I doubt they are worth the money. If you are really interested in learning, I would suggest applying to various restaurants and bars. Also you may have a good chance at your local bars, if you can convince the owner or management to give you a chance. Tell them you would really like to learn, and be dedicated to them if they do give you a chance. Is bartending school really necessary to become a bartender?
No not at all. How I became a bartender was started as a cocktail waitress in a night club, then once the manager got to know me and I proved I knew what was in drinks he gave me a shot behind the bar.

School doesn't teach you what you need to know - exerience does.Is bartending school really necessary to become a bartender?
Depends on where you want to bartend. In some states, it is a requirement. But in alot of places have someone who is a waitress who just 'happens' to the run the bar when the bartender is busy (my friend did this for several months). In situations like that, you don't actually need a license.

You can get a better job if you've finished the program, though. Is bartending school really necessary to become a bartender?
I run a business that sells $6 million of liquor a year, and I hire and train 300-400 per year. I would take an experienced bartender over someone who went to school in a minute. BUT, it's the old no job, no experience therefore no experience, no job problem. Get your foot in the door as a server or a cocktail server, and work your way up.
