This site answers this question pretty well... Bartending schools can help quite a bit, but it's practice that's going to take you to where you want to be. Check out what this site says about bartending schools.Online bartending school?
Honestly, bartending school is a scam. They say they prepare you for becoming a bartender, but restaurants and bars laugh at those applications (literally). And the job connections they claim to "have" are just jobs they find posted online.

I've been bartending for 6 years now. You're best bet is to walk into a bar and try and get a job as a bar back and work your way up. Restaurants work too, but it takes longer to become a bartender. It also depends on what state you live in, because every state has different licensing requirements to pour/serve alcohol. More than likely you have to be Bassett certified or whatever the statute is for your state (Some cities require a secondary license to bartend within their township).

So save your $300-1500 that they were going to charge you and try for a job at a bar. If you want to learn anything in the meantime, find a couple of simple things that'll probably total $50 to train yourself: Basic bar beverage recipe book (online or in a store), Bartender's pour test (some bars allow free pours so you need to be able to hit certain marks accurately and on the fly - (1/4oz 1/2oz 3/4oz 1oz and so forth), practice bottles to learn how to flair (juggle) the bottles, and a jigger.

Best of luck, but seriously save your money.
