I'm doing a research paper where I have to ask a question regarding future schooling or jobs. Mine is bartending school vs. on the job training for being a bartender. I need this information as soon as possible and any sources would be greatly appreciated. What are the pros and cons of going to bartending schools?
School is a waste of money.
Get a job as a bar back.
then get a copy of of the Cunningham book listed below and some index cards and make yourself some flash cards.
If you study the book and the person running the bar you will be a bartender in no time and you will earn while you learn.
Bartending school will teach you how to pour but nobody will hire you to be a bartender if you have no experience.
This book is in every great bar!!What are the pros and cons of going to bartending schools?
Bartenders have excellent people skills. You can't learn that in bartending school. You are either born with or without a knack of handling people. So if you do have a knack, the bar owner will pick up on it and hire you. The only thing a bartending school might be good for is learning how to make different types of drinks, like a Brass Monkey, a Rob Roy, or a Marguerita. Yet there are recipe books in every bar so one doesn't need to know all of those recipes off hand. What are the pros and cons of going to bartending schools?
I learned on the job. Most bartenders start as waiters, and you get to learn the popular drinks (and gain regular clientele) that way. The only bartender I ever worked with who went to bartending school was also the worst. I'm sure it was a coincidence but...
