Technically it was a school but not a corporate set up. This guy with lifetime of experience taught bartending at his home. It was more of a tutoring. He did the normal drink mixing teaching but were he set himself apart was he taught about customer service. He taught how to watch employees who were suspected of ripping off the bar, how to talk with a drunk and some other very practical lessons.
He had "job leads" but they were just really his connections AKA friends in the industry. I landed a job as a bartender trainee which was a bar back position for what was $6.75 Hr then. I began mixing drinks as a fill-in after a couple of months and within 6 I was a full time bar-keep.
What I feel is the best benefit was the for a few hundred bucks I was given a chance at a job that may have taken weeks or months to find on my own. That and his personal tales and tips of the trade gave me wisdom beyond my experience.
These schools can be highly over priced so buyer beware.Success from Bartending School?

Success from Bartending School?Yes, I think it is probably worth the time and money you will spend. I have bartending for over 15 years now and have taken several courses along the way. I learn something every time and they are usually pretty fun. They also look great on your resume. As far as the money you make behind the bar, well that is entirely up to you. Its possible to be slow and charm a guest out of a hundred dollar tip. Go for it. Check out my blog I just started. Its got some stories, tips and cocktail recipes. Best of luck!
