I want to get a job as a bartender, but I dont have any experience as one or in food service.Do you need to attend bartending school to become a bartender?
If you are 21, ask your local bartender. If you want to work at a casino or a hotel, probably. If you want to work at the neighborhood dive, probably not, but 2 or 3 years at the dive might get you enough experience to qualify for the casino.Do you need to attend bartending school to become a bartender?
No, you don't have to go to school, just find a place that will hire someone. I was thrown behind the bar on my first day, no experience, and barely any training. I bartended for 9 years after that. You just have to find a place (usually a non-chain restaurant or dive bar).
i think you go to bartending school! April fools!!!! But any way im not sure?Do you need to attend bartending school to become a bartender?
No, you don't have to go to school. They trained servers with potential at Applebee's when I worked there. If you apply and say you're interested in bartending they'll probably make you serve for a while, but they'll train you for free.
No you do not, but I would suggest that you do. I personally went to school and am a certified mixologist. A mixologist is someone who knows more than a bartender. Not only that, but potential employers seem to prefer someone who is more knowledgeable. I also got a letter of recommendation from the school after I graduated, and the school only lasted a week. You will learn amazing things in school.Do you need to attend bartending school to become a bartender?
Bartending school is the great American Rip-off. No one hires people straight out of bartending school. Become a server or barback and work your way up. That's how the system works. Get yourself a cocktail recipe book, and a few bottles and pour spouts and practice at home. Work on your pour counts, and your customer service ability. Restaurant bars are typically at more slow pace, while nightclub bars are fast-paced, high volume. You'll need to be able to help 3 or 4 customers at once, while keeping track of their tabs or credit cards at the same time. 2 biggest reasons why bartenders get fired? They steal and they get drunk. Don't do any of these, and you'll have a good paying job for a long time. I've been at it for over 12 years...

Is it best to go to bartending school to become a bartender? If so, which one is the best in New Jersey?
I was told by someone I know that did a bartending course that it was a waste of money. Is it best to go to bartending school to become a bartender? If so, which one is the best in New Jersey?
It is a huge waste. I've been bartending for about 12-13 years and I have never worked with or hired anybody that had some 'bar diploma'. This is the one industry where your schooling means nothing, experience is everything. All you would get out of a class would be learning your basic recipes but that's only a part of it. Another big part of it is your demeanor, your confidence, your attitude, your friendliness, etc... Things that come naturally. You can buy a book (The Complete Bartender is a good one) and learn alot of recipes, but alot of drink recipes are regional, some drinks are made one way in NY but in FL they may add another mixer or something. Shots particularly are regional. Until you're behind the bar, you won't really know which shots you make on a regular basis. Actually, until you're behind the bar, recipes on paper don't mean much. You have to DO it to get the hang of it. Practice flairing, jokes, tricks, how to hold the bottle, pouring %26amp; things like that. Check out showtenders.com, they have alot videos, from the basics to advanced stuff, that you can order %26amp; learn from. My recommendation? Buy the books, learn your basics %26amp; apply for a job at a corporate restaurant, say an Applebee's or an Olive Garden, %26amp; lie on your application. Say you worked at some small mom %26amp; pop place somewhere far away that has since closed down so they can't get a reference. The best part of this is that these types of places are going to put you thru a training program anyway so that you can learn their house recipes %26amp; the way they want you to do things. That way you'll get the hang of being back there as well as getting some face time with real guests. Is it best to go to bartending school to become a bartender? If so, which one is the best in New Jersey?
Check with the NJ Alcohol Commission. They should know.
But why would you want to sell alcohol to some one who goes out and kills some one or injures them because they had one to many drinks and you end up in jail because you were the last one to serve them and then there comes up the question is that person of legal age.
bartending school is a hoax. it is just a money maker, and every bar has their own little way of doing things. if you want to learn, make your self a little bar with all the staples get some recipes and invite your friends over give them the menu and practice. and throw a bottle or two around for some flair! Is it best to go to bartending school to become a bartender? wellmy sister took bartending, and she said it was basic. I believe having took a bartending class may make a prospective job easier to get. Someone hiring a bartender may like

try to get a mentorship at a bar. work for tips only. you can do this without paying anyone.
Find the right bar for you where you can make money Then start at the bottom and work your way up from bar back to bartender. Ask lots of questions and pointers. Once you start to learn how things go, Im sure the bartender would appreciate the help on busy nights. choice #2 buy booze, find friends and drink your mistakes!
The someone who told you that is right. Better off to learn from a real bartender. If you can get a job where you can learn as you go you'd learn far more. You won't make much money until you get the hang of it. Most bartenders don't split tips while they are breaking you in, but you'd be saving the cost of the school and learning things you need to know in the real world.
I went to bartending school..and the only job i could get was for catering companys..actual bar jobs..are given mostly on a time basis..gatta be there..every bar has there own main drinks and busy times..and they only want to put someone behind the bar that knows them. so being a bar back or a waiter or waitress is really the first step...having gone to bartending school with help..but its only the pinky toe of getting your foot in the door...

How much does bartending school typically cost?
I've looked at a bunch of websites for schools, but none of them list prices. How much does it cost on average? How much does bartending school typically cost?
Too much. Its a giant waste of money. Go apply at a bar and get some first hand experience. Its not a hard job.How much does bartending school typically cost?
I paid $400. Books and practicing with liqour in your kitchen won't help much. Unless you know some who owns a bar ( and I didn't ) school was the only option for me. The school i went to had the price on the website. How much does bartending school typically cost?
any where from $300-1000.
You can also go to any bookstore (Borders, Barnes and Nobles, etc.) and buy a drink book and practice at home with liquor. It is hard to get a job at a decent restaurant or bar without experience.

Is bartending school worth it?
My boyfriend is looking into bartending school. I've heard it isn't worth the money. For those of you who know about this type of stuff, is there any school you went to that was worth the money? And if you don't go to an y type of school, how do you get into bartending as a profession?
He's been looking into it, but of course, all job seekers are looking for someone with experience. So how do you get that experience from step one?
Thanks!!Is bartending school worth it?
Unless the state or county law requires it, it's not worth the money.
The best way to get a job as a bartender is to start at a new club as a bar back and then wait for the opportunity to move up.
At a restaurant, start as a server, start volunteering for bar back shifts and then move up from there.
If he's really really good looking with a fun personality, then he might be able to start cold at a new club - given he has work experience and references.
But yeah, experience is usually the only way to get the job.Is bartending school worth it?
WOW...thanks for asking this.i wanted to know the same thing(but for me).so thanks everyone for commenting on this
if he loves it tell him to go for itIs bartending school worth it?
Bartending school sounds fun, but that's it. Best to get a job as a bar back. You'll be the designated slave of the bartenders, but you'll learn on the job and be in the environment. Show initiative, a willingness to learn, and some street smarts...maybe he'll get a break to bartend some nights.
I know bars, I hang out at bars, and I'll tell ya, bartending schools have nothing to do with bars.
99 percent of drinks ordered are simple. for example a rum and coke , vodka tonic etc...
Beer
There is the young crowd that orders a few fancy drinks, but usually there is only a handful of them and hardly worth a school. Even if he learns all the latest drinks, sure enough there will be new ones.
What bartending is ... is taking care of the customer by serving drinks-- taking money and cutting off the drunks.
It's a very easy job when it comes down to it. I'm not saying it's a easy job but the actual making/serving part is not really that hard.
What it does take is a person who is able to be in control and knows how to BS people. Is bartending school worth it?
bartender school cant be taken seriously...if you want to learn, get a volunteer positon at a bar for 3 weeks on weekends if no one will hire you. you will make tips and learn at the same time. also, bartending as a career is very limiting, look into something larger ie. restaurant management, hotel management if you like that industry, and get a diploma that counts.
only if you really want to be a bartender
I've worked in restaurants for a long time. Hear is what I suggest:
Learning to make drinks is easy. You do not need to go to school. Your boyfriend can study a bartenders drink dictionary and learn how to make the drinks.
The hard part is learning to multi-task and working a busy bar.
If he thinks he has the multi-tasking skills and the people skills to work at a bar, then I suggest that he lie on his resume. I've known many bartenders who have done it. They never check references. But even if they do, he can make up fictitious bars that can't be called for a reference. He can then gain experience from his first job, and it will be easy to find a job thereafter.
Another good way would be for him to get a job as a server in a restaurant. Most places promote their servers to bartenders.
i was a bartender for 6 years i really liked it i did not go to school you can go to a good book store get a book and learn your self i made good money lots of tips and enjoyed it you meet alot of people to make real good money you would have to go to a big town and a classy place
No, It's not cost effective. If no bar will hire you as a bar back, go to a restaurant. You can work up from waiter.
from my experience its not worth the money. most places wont hire you because most places still have signature drinks you have to learn. i know a few people who went but they said they wouldnt do it again.

Which is the best bartending school in bay area?
I am considering taking bartending classes and as i know, if graduating from a more reputable one it is more likely to get hired. So please suggest a better one in the bay area.Which is the best bartending school in bay area?
which bay area?
there are many bay areas around the world
i would guess you might be referring to San Francisco?
there are a few, and likely you will learn the same stuff at all of them.
Just be warned, most professionals agree its a waste of $$$. you can learn more for free by just becoming a bar back, or buying a $5 book and start mixing for friends and family.battlefield bad company

Is bartending school a good idea to help me pay my way through school?
I just moved to Dalls /Fort Worth and I need a job to get me through my last two years of school. Do think its worth it? How much are the schools? Does anyone know? I'm cute so I think I'll make good money in tips and the certificate only requires 40 hrs of training. Is bartending school a good idea to help me pay my way through school?
I would say no, not really anyways.
I'm a bartender, so I can tell you that all you really need is:
1. To be good looking and have an outgoing personality.
2. Get a job serving/cocktailing at a sports bar, or any other bar or restaurant that has bartenders.
If you have personality, looks, and are persistent you can move up to bartender in no time, and not have to pay the $700.00, or whatever the going rate is these days.Is bartending school a good idea to help me pay my way through school?
Well i'd recommend you just get a job as a waitress at a good restaurant.
You would make about as much as you would as a bartender.
With a couple of important benefit's.
1. free or discounted food, that will save you money.
2. as a bartender, you probally will not get off work until 2 or 3 in the morning.
Coming in at 2 am, is not very helpful for your studies.
Compare that to a waitress, who would get home around 10 or 11 pm.
The work hours is the biggest factor,
You may or may not be able to align your class schedule, so you would not have any morning class's.
But they usually don't offer upper level class's multiple times a day, like they do lower level class's.
So it might be hard, not to have a 8 am class.
Imagine, getting off work at 2 am, then having a test at 8 am.
I worked my way thru college, it's hard enough, without making your job conflict with school.
You know you can just work at a bar and learn as you go. When I took it the class was about $1000 plus $50 for licensing. Is bartending school a good idea to help me pay my way through school?
Yes; You can work out a loan for whatever it costs (though you might hold back 'school' for a while; you're a career woman!); and no

Do you HAVE to be 21 to attend Bartending School?
I'm not asking how old you have to be to actually be a Bartender... rather... How old do you have to be to go to Bartending School and get your licence???Do you HAVE to be 21 to attend Bartending School?
I believe its 18...i live in illinois and I know you can't work behind a bar until you are 21 but you can be a waitress and serve it at 18-19. But i think to go to school its 18...at the school you obviously won't be drinking alcohol...it'll be mocktails you'll be learning .
PS I went to bartending school and it was fun! But...in my opinion you can learn the same things from a bartending black book or bartending for dummies book...most of the bartending is learned on the spot.Do you HAVE to be 21 to attend Bartending School?
id imagine some schools would let you go at 18. im sure it depends on the state and the school.Do you HAVE to be 21 to attend Bartending School?
Every state is different. To be a bartender, not go to school, most states have gone to 21. In Texas you can do both at 18, but in South Carolina it is 21.
My advice is to learn by serving. I do this for a living and I will not hire a bartending school graduate with no experience. My experience tells me they know how to put a umbrella in a drink, but have no idea how to deal with a drunk, underage customers, fights, and cutting people off (nicely).

Should I go to bartending school?
I am a clean-cut male who is considering going to school to be a bartender.
But I am worried that I won"t be able to find a job when I finish.
Can I make decent money?
150 a night would be enough for me.
I am in Los Angeles but would move if I found a job.Should I go to bartending school?
You don't have to go to school to be a bartender most places want experience and would laugh if you said you went to school for it. All you need to do is get a job as a barback ( person who helps the bartender) or a waiter and then say you want to train to be a bartender. The schools are a waste of money and a rip off.Should I go to bartending school?
i wouldnt go to bartending school...most clubs want you to learn their way and would laugh at you if you told them you went to a bartending school. i worked ia a bar last year and was bring home 2,000 a week and i wasnt even the best...i never went to school i just learned by watching others and it always helps to have friends the bartend
You definitely should and please learn diff rent tricks with bottle and become the GOD OF COCKTAILS and the you will be the hit all the nightclubs.Should I go to bartending school?
You would be able to find a job of course, but if you could find another profession that you like that you can make more money doing, then, choose that one.
Could go to butler school - then you'll earm even more.Should I go to bartending school?
I worked in the bar industry for years before i went to bartending school, I found it helped me progress quicker once i took the course. I recommend it. I now have moved into management and i think my bartending classes helped get me here.
Do what ever you want to do.
I THINK YOU WOULD DEFINITELY BE ABLE TO FIND A JOB. BIG CLUBS ARE ALWAYS IN NEED OF BARTENDERS AND THE TIPS ARE AWESOME.

Has anybody been to Bartending school?
Hey guys, I was thinking about going to Bartending school (it's relatively cheap here in Arizona; around $200-$300) I am a Pre-Med student, and I was highly considering Bar-tending as a source of income until I graduate from college. Is the school really worth it? I plan on only working for chain restaurants or hotel restaurants. They offer 100% job placement, so I'm not sure if it's a scam or not. Thanks!Has anybody been to Bartending school?
They are not worth it and for the most part a joke and a waste of money. They teach you how to make drinks with colored water and not much more.
Any hiring manager doesn't consider going to one of these schools a plus. Reputable bars do not get their staff from bartending schools.
The 100% placement is more than likely at places so bad or so cheap no one wants to work for them.
I was sent to a bartending school after I had been bartending for a few years already by an inexperienced bar owner who was convinced we couldn't possible know what I was doing without going to 'school'. My self and a couple of other experienced bartenders spent 2 weeks of wasted nights snickering together while making long island ice teas and margaritas out of food colored water!Has anybody been to Bartending school?
I haven't, but it can't hurt.
That's not a major financial investment and you're bound to learn some things while there that will make getting a bartending job easier, and after you do, make you more marketable because you'd know more already ..Has anybody been to Bartending school?
Just getting a bartending job somewhere low-class. (lie and say you've bartended before, they won't hire anyone without experience)
It's not hard to learn rudimentary bartending skills and real-world experience trumps education 100% of the time.Has anybody been to Bartending school?
well if ur a alcoholic then bartending would be bad beacsue you would crave it and drink to much, if u drink lightly then ur fine

What's the next step after bartending school?
I just completed the school a couple of weeks ago and have worked two parties since. Should I lie on my resume and say I have 2 years experience or just try to work more parties? Any other ideas? What's the next step after bartending school?
As a restaurant manager, I have hired people right out of bar school. A lot of people will hire based on personality and enthusiasm. I can teach you how to be a good bartender but there is not much I can do if your personality is lacking. However, I would not hire you for busy dinner shifts so you should be prepared to work days only until you gain more experience. You might also apply for bar back which gives you an opportunity to learn the company culture, food and drinks. Under no circumstances should you lie. I will hire if you don't have much experience but never if you falsify information on your application or resume.
Good luck to you. What's the next step after bartending school?
Go to a bar and ask for a Barback position. If it's on a popular street with other bars and clubs, they may want work from you as well. Otherwise if applying, go to a bar that is not so busy. But that will = less tips.
Good luckWhat's the next step after bartending school?
bartending school is a waste of money. every restairant ive worked in doesnt hire outside bartrenders. you have to work in the restairant and work your way to bartending, you dont learn anything you need to know in bartending school, everything uyou need to know you learn from experience. i had a manager that would throw away applictions that said bartending school on themWhat's the next step after bartending school?
Don't lie on resume - Bar owners could tell on the first night if you been on the business for 20 minutes or 20 years. Besides it's bad karma.
Keep doing those parties - That's how I started (ah good times). It's a great experience and something you use to build your resume. Have at least 5 or 6 under your belt - don't forget to get names for references.
Go to Staples or a stationary store. Make up some business cards. Put them in a rocks glass when you are working or spread around to advertise.
I understand that party gigs are not permanent - On your free nights hit up local collage bars for guest bartender night.
The more experience you have and more you have on paper - the better the chance you will get hired by your future boss.
Good luck -

Should i go to bartending school?
should i spend $500 on a 2 week course at midwest bartending school? if not why? it seems like it would fun and they have job placement assistanceShould i go to bartending school?
Hi there,
I went through the same question last week, cuz i too was deciding on whether or not i should just attend a bartending school. So here are the pros and cons that i have seen and read about before i made my decision:
The cons where that its a waste of $$ and that i should just get a recipe book, also that most establishments like to hire bartenders from with in (which would mean you would have to start off as a waiter/waitress before being promoted to bartender). Another con i heard was that some bar owners require you to have expirience instead of bartending classes and also that you dont really need to be certified to become a bartender.
Even after those cons i still decided to do the bartending class (which is the same as yours a 2 week 40 hour course) and it is AWESOME......it is loads of fun and you learn A LOT. you learn different things like how to open and close up your bar each day, lots of drink recipes, the legal side of being a bartender (like how u could get arrested for giving a minor alcohol even if the BOUNCER was the one who checked his ID and let him in) you also learn about tips, Customer service, and my school has a lesson about doing private parties. So in the long run i believe it is a GREAT HANDS on expirience, because yeah sure you CAN go and buy a recipe book, but what good does that do you? I learn best doing hands on things and at the school you constantly practice making the drinks so many times that you get the flow of things. The classes are also so much fun, and im so sad that ill be graduating friday :( Plus the school is set up like a REAL bar, so they have a bar, soda guns, real liquor bottles (with water and food coloring in it though lol) etc. so you use real equiptment.
So the choice is your, but i honestly say got for it. The only thing though is that i think your getting over charged mines was UNDER $400 so look around, and also most schools would allow you to take a free class to go check out their school, which i did once i narrowed it down to two schools, and the visit was definately worth it. that way you get a sense of the school and if you like it.Should i go to bartending school?
NO! Don't go! It is a huge waste of money! Bartending schools do not teach you anything that you can't learn from a good drink dictionary. You can pick one up from a used bookstore for about $1.
Bars and restaurants will not hire bartenders without experience. They will, however, promote from within. Get a job as server or barback. When they have an opening for a bartender, apply for the job.
Bar owners and managers could care less if someone went to bartending school. What they look for is experience, a positive attitude, great customer service skills, the ability to multi-task and the ability to work well under pressure.
The job placement assistance sounds like a crock of s@$#! The best way to become a bartender is to gain experience and work your way up.
Many years ago I attended a one-week bartending school. I learned enough during the course to be confident that I could handle a bartending job from day 1. I was able to find a job almost immediately, and the manager who hired me told me the bartending course was the reason (along with the overall impression I projected) he offered me the job, since I did not have experience.
All in all, it was a good experience, and I would recommend it, but I would hope you could find a course where the price is less than $500. It's true that I took the course back in the dinosaur age (actually, 1976) when I was young, and we all know things have changed since then, but I paid $155 for a one-week course. I felt it was worth it. And there was one extra "bonus" that sort of fell into my lap. On the last day of class, a very attractive woman that all the guys were after like wolves all week, handed me a piece of paper with her phone number and said "I want you to call me". Now you tell me, was bartending school a worthwhile experience?Should i go to bartending school?
Hi
I did a bartending course %26amp; it was really fun. I also met some really cool people!!
I dont so much work in pubs/clubs anymore as I just personally cannot tolerate dealing with drunk %26amp; ignorant people.
If you get in that industry most of the people that I've worked with just drink... always... they dont do anything else.
when i did work in the hospitatily industry aswell I could only work at a job for about 3 - 4 months at a time because of some of the customers that you have to deal with.
Before you go there you must find a cheaper place unless you are desperate to go to that school and you have a lot of money. If that's what you really want, than you should go there.Should i go to bartending school?
Don't go to bartending school (i.e. don't waste the money) unless the job you are applying to requires such an endevour (usually only hotels and casinos ask for that kind of stuff)
Also, most states don't require a license either. Depending on what state you live in you need ot make sure of the age requirements (most states require that you are 21 years old and that's it, some want you to get a state license...etc...) Just check the laws for your state (go here: http://www2.potsdam.edu/hansondj/StateAn鈥?/a>
The most important thing that you should do is pick up the Bartender's Black Book (you can usually find it at a local package store, if not order it from Amazon). It has thousands of recipes, Plus all the basics, terms, and measurements you need to memorize immediately. Learning your pour count, knowing how to make a Long Island, a Martini, a Cosmo, how to tap a keg, etc...
Other than knowing how to pour drinks and serve drinks quickly, the main thing a bartender has to do is listen/talk to people. Make sure you are a people person. You have to love to listen too, especially to drunks. You also want to be up to date on local stuff (where the best entertainment spots are, the nearest hotel, the cab's number, etc...) You also need to have at least two jokes you can pull from memory. One dirty, and one you could tell your mother. Both have to be funny. Also be up to date on all sports scores, especially on local teams. Know who is playing who and at what time (make sure to have it on the TV too).
When starting out, it may be tough to get a job. The best thing to do is to apply to all the places that cycle through bartenders/barbacks a lot (like restaurants, hotel bars, etc...) Then find bars that you like personally and become somewhat of a regular at those places. Get to know the other bartenders, owners, managers, and then in a few months drop the line that you would be willing to work for them. Start out as a barback and work your way up. Most small bars are run like families anyway. You will have to know your fellow employees well. That is how I got my first two bartending jobs and eventually made it to bar manager.
Bartending is an extremely fun job. You will meet tons of people and hear lots of interesting stories. Plus you will know alcohol better than the back of your hand. I find it to be quite rewarding when it comes to the bank account too.
Have Fun and Good Luck.

Is it worth going to a bartending school?
I want to get a second job and I love drinks so I was thinking of doing bartending..but was just wondering if its worth going to the school.or wuld it just be a waste?I live in north dallasIs it worth going to a bartending school?
well you need certification (in most places) in order to be a bartender, however you can take classes online which might be easier for you rather than attending an actual school. You can make quite a bit of money being a bartender (if you can put up with the late hours), so the decision is up to you if you feel it would be a good move for you. Schooling of some sort would be worth it though.

I'm thinking about going to bartending school but i have absolutely no idea what its about..
how much does it cost, is it worth it, and is that the best way to learn?
any information would be great - especially about personal experience. thank you!Questions abour bartending school?
If you already have a gig an want to sharpen your skills bartending school is great. If not beware. I went to Bartending College in Denver. If you have no experience and go then you can expect to leave looking for a job at a bowling alley or college bar. They sent me to a few high end places and I'm glad the people were cool. They felt bad the school sent me to them. They told me just that go find a nice slow bar to start at or go start as a bar back somewhere.
There is the real advice get a start as a bar back somewhere were you can learn the real skills. They will teach you want you need to know and then spend time on your own playing around mixing drinks.
So my final advice bartending college might be worth it after you've been a bar back or bartending somewhere divey and you are ready to make the jump up.Questions abour bartending school?

Why go to bartending school ?Go to your local hostelry and watch what the people behind the bar do,listen and learn. Then approach any decent innkeeper and ask for a job,if you then still like being the hub of conversation, the person that listens to everyones problems and still manages to keep the bar running consider going to an approved school to learn the necessary skills to progress further in the job.To be a good barperson looks deceptively easy but is a very hard thing to achieve.

What is the best bartending school in UK ?
Hey I wanna be a barman . but I dont know How to do .
If I work as barman , Do I need any certification or qualification ?
and if there is any good bartending course , Please tell me that .What is the best bartending school in UK ?
I don't think there is a bartending course as (not in the UK anyway) such but there are qualifications available, Try the wine and spirit education trust (WSET) an internationally recognised course, see link. Also a qualification in "hospitality" may be worth a go many colleges run these courses. Best way in is to get a job part-time at a local pub or something and go from there. Much of the training for this is on the job. What is the best bartending school in UK ?
You need to go to Dublin and get a job as an apprentice barman there. Ireland is the only country in the British Isles where barmen get proper training.

Should I go to bartending school?
I worked in bars for over 4 years as a waitress. I also worked as a beverage cart driver for 5 summers (where I had to mix drinks) and worked behind the bar at the golf course on Sunday mornings. It's been two years since I've worked in the service industry, but I'm considering going to bartending school. I'd like to get a job as a bartender without having to wait tables again? Does this sound like something I'd be able to do?Should I go to bartending school?
ABC Bartending School has excellent reviews, the course is only a couple weeks... and job placement assistance. These days, I think that is well worth a few hundred bucks.

Good luck :)Should I go to bartending school?
I would spend plenty of time applying for a bar servers job before doling out the money for that school. Taking nothing away from bar servers, but let's face it, it is not a tough job. I understand some customers can be tough, but making a drink does not need paid schooling. Good luck and have a wonderful day.Should I go to bartending school?
Don't bother. Experience counts for more than any bartending school degree. Bartending school is a rip-off. I did it once out of desperation, and it didn't help me at all in landing a job.
My advice, just get whatever bartending job you can get at first. Any bartending job at all, even if it's not necessarily at a place that you'd like to work long-time. Spend at least six months there getting bartending experience for your resume. Then you can use that experience to move on to whatever bartending job you like.
An acquaintance of mine did this. He started in some dive bar for a six month stretch. Then he moved on to a better job. Within a couple years he went on to become a bar manager.Should I go to bartending school?
Bartending schools are a scam and a waste of money, that's that.
Everyone works their way up from the bottom in the bar/club/service industry, it's all on-the-job training.
"Degree"s from bartending schools are laughed at openly by bartenders and bar managers.

Should I go to bartending school?
I got a new job as a dishwasher at a sports bar and restaurant and was hoping to move up to a busboy then waiter then bartender. I don't think bartending school will make much of a differance.Should I go to bartending school?
I never recommend anyone go to bartending school - the best (And usually only) way to get a job in the industry is to work your way up the food chain at a club/restaurant. Since you're already doing that, I would suggest that you save your money and just ask for extra shifts barbacking so that you can actually talk to and learn from the bartenders there.
IMHO, bartending schools are all scams and wastes of money - no one in the industry respects a 'degree' from them at all, and actually, I've seen it hurt people's chances at jobs because of the stigma attached to bartending school grads (They think they know much, much more then they actually do)
Keep on doing what you're doing, work your way up, learn everything you can from the bartenders at your place, and you'll get there eventually. Good luck!Should I go to bartending school?
in your situation, sure go for it! its only two weekends of mixing colored liquids and learning what any alky would know. in addition, i feel this would show your employer that you're serious about it and it's always easier to move people up within the restaurant then outside of it. ive been a bar manager for a couple years now and im only 25 so one can move up fast if the scenario is right.
let your boss know that you're taking the class and inform him/her that you would like to barback (a busboy exclusively for the bar).
competition is fierce for these kinda jobs but just work hard! good luck!!!Should I go to bartending school?
can you afford it. . ?
there are two schools of thought here
One is to work your way up and the other is school
there are some community colleges that offer courses in Mixology or bar-tending. .
SO evaluate- - training for knowledge and technical data that you gain skill at- - verses waiting for someone telling you what they want you to know. .
I was taught to know every thing before testing
O J T will still take place But you will have skill
My opinion - - can you afford it . . ? ?
a diploma never has to be mentioned but when ask it may mean you got the job over the bus boyShould I go to bartending school?
Yes, it will give you job leads. I like your name.
sure it wont hurt

Anyone attended National Bartenders Bartending School?
I have heard a lot of bartending schools are scams, but I was thinking about taking courses at one to get some experience. I'm already planning on studying some books and practicing at home with a make-shift bar. I was considering this school because I don't really know anyone in the F%26amp;B industry that could help with a shoe-in, so I thought this could possibly be helpful. (I wouldn't put it on my resume, however, or tell potential employers I took the course). Thanks!Anyone attended National Bartenders Bartending School?
I own a bar and I never consider a bartending school when hiring a new employee. Number one is personality. You also should be able to multi task and stay organized. It's never good to fold under pressure either. When I first started bartending my boss and friend gave me a list of about 80 drinks and shooters. He told me to memorize them and come back in week.
Most guys start by being a barback or bartenders assistant. Girls start serving first and then move to the bar. All bartenders tend to start with slower day shift before they can move to busier night shifts.
So I say don't bother with the school. Get a job as a server and learn as much as possible on the job.Anyone attended National Bartenders Bartending School?
Hi, Hope you don't think I am trying to down bartending schools to much but my friend and I have discussed this matter a few times. She went to bartending school and I ordered this bartending book off line. She still does not have a job, and I do. I think it is because the book I studied explained how and what to do step by step in a real bar atmosphere, and school was a very fast paced atmosphere for her. She ended up ordering the same bartending book as me.I loved this book! You can learn what you really need to know, not all this stuff about how wine and beer is made. No one ever asked me how beer is made? they just want a beer. I wouldn't waste all that money on school, but some people dont know about this bartending book. I found it on line .its called bartending exposed.com anyway its worth the money. hope this was helpfulAnyone attended National Bartenders Bartending School?
It depends on the shoes you're wearing.

How much is bartending school?
Ok does anyone know how much the White Horse bartending school in NJ is? I'm not sure if it's worth going, but I don't know much about mixing drinks, and I think this will at least help me barback at the very least. I know you learn a lot more from actually doing it, but no one will even give you a chance if you know nothing at all. so yea, anyone know how much??How much is bartending school?
I don't.
I don't.
Bartending school?
looking for any bartending classes that someone has benefited from or at least know of someone whos benefited in the atlanta areaBartending school?
DON'T GO! I blew $400 on this scam. They just want your money and don't have any real connections. I went to one and stayed in touch with 2 other people that went and neither of them got any jobs through them and the same goes for me. Hell, you don't even use real liquor or get to taste any of the drinks to know what is good. They just use colored water. :(
If you really want to get a job bartending, get to know some people at the bar you want to work at. If you're good at making connections you should be able to get a job. If not, then bartending really isn't the career you want anyway because you have to like people and want to talk to them. Bartending managers want customers to keep coming back so they can make money. The actual bartending skill isn't nearly as important as looks and charm.
That's the best advice I can give you. But absolutely do not go to bartending school because you will get laughed at by real bar managers. I ended up just getting to know a bar manager when my band played some gigs and now I work there part time. I didn't even tell them I went to bartending school and I never will because I have learned it's an embarrassment. I feel so stupid and ripped off for going to one.
I hope this helps. Bye.Bartending school?
My mom went to the Atlanta Bartending School a while back in Marietta and loved it.

is there a school in singapore that has bartendingBartending school?
maybe you can try shatec.under food and beverages.one of their modules is bartending.Bartending school?

The best way to get into bartending is to go to work for a small bar and learn the trade. Bartending schools can cost a fair penny and may not even place you.
I'd have to go with maggie on this. Or restaurants with bars. Schools are mostly a waste of money, and placement sucks. No one hires someone who hasn't been behind a bar and gotten their behind kicked a few times.Bartending school?

I was considering going to bartending school but a lot of people are telling me it's a waste of money but usually the people that tell me it's a waste of money are people who "bartend" at restaraunts and all they do is basic stuff like pour drafts and shots. I want to learn EVERYTHING but I don't want to waste my money. is there anyone who's actually been to bartending school who would have an educated opinion.Bartending School?
It's a joke. We laugh at the "know it alls" who waste their money on bartending school and then apply at our bar. Any decent establishment wants an experienced bartender i.e. years of paid experience. Most bartenders start out in the places you described, pouring simple drinks and drafts. I have met a few bartending school graduates...they tend to think there is only one way to make a drink(the way they were taught) and can't grasp the concept that nobody cares what they learned in the "bartending academy" the customer wants the drink the way THEY want it...which may be the way they had it at another establishment. They usually have never worked in a restaurant or bar before and have no idea how things really work. My advice is to get a good book that describes all the standard drinks and how they are made and study it. Get familiar with the different types of liquors and their flavor profiles. Then sit at the well when you go to the bar, try different drinks and watch what they are doing, which bottles they use, what glass they pour into, which garnish they use, whether they blend, shake or free-pour it over ice etc... feel free to ask the bartender questions if they aren't busy and don't forget to leave a fat tip!Bartending School?
I have been to a lot of bartending classes and i feel learning from an expert gives you an exposure to the thought process.
ofcourse if you are like me who has been around drink mixers since 5 yrs of age you will be in tune with it.
if you want to break it big in the hot locations you may wanna get a professional certificate or so coz sometimes it is a prerequisite. if ur looking for TGIF kinda gig you'l have inhouse training and a job.

waste of money, get a job as a server at a restaurant them work your way up to the bar and go from there. you pourcolored water at bartending school and bars laugh at people that go to bartending school. the only way that it may be a good idea is if you are a drop dead georgous girl with an amazing body, then it may helpBartending School?
as a manager that has hired probably 75 bartendrs, if youve bartended before you will probably get hired, but there is no reason you should not go to bartening school. Someone applying for a position that has had bar traing versus someon that hasn't who do you thinks goanna get the job?The person with training. Yeah you can work your way up from server or you can get hired in bar training and its faster.christian book

Bartending school...?
Can anyone reccommend a good bartending school near Bowie MD? DC, Annapolis or Baltimore are fine.
Thanks!Bartending school...?
Don't go to bartending school (i.e. don't waste the money) unless the job you are applying to requires such an endevour (usually only hotels and casinos ask for that kind of stuff)
Also, most states don't require a license either. Depending on what state you live in you need to make sure of the age requirements (most states require that you are 21 years old and that's it, some want you to get a state license...etc...) Just check the laws for your state (go here: http://www2.potsdam.edu/hansondj/StateAn鈥?/a>
The most important thing that you should do is pick up the Bartender's Black Book (you can usually find it at a local package store, if not order it from Amazon).
Have Fun and Good Luck!Bartending school...?
Bartending schools are a waste. Get yourself a job as a barback, buy a coupla good bartending books (yes, they same drink will have different ingredients in different books--don't freak out), learn the standard drinks, learn your regional favorites (they vary greatly), and do it yourself. It ain't rocket science. Here's a little secret: real bartenders laugh behind the backs of bartending school graduates. I mean puh-leeze, get a life.
not offhand, but i can tell you what every professional bartender says when anyone asks about these schools/classes or certification:
ITS NOT WORTH IT
for the $500+ that it costs, you can get more experience just stocking up your bar and hosting a few parties... you get to learn what people in your area drink, and how to mix them, you get actual practical use and a lot of fun.
or just start working in a bar, and you will pick up whant you need.Bartending school...?
I cannot. But, if your state doesn't require bartending school, it's a waste of money.
You become a bartender by getting a lower level job and then working your way up. Or, study at home and then apply, assuming you have a ton of cocktail or serving experience.
If you are of age, head to some places that you might like to work and speak with the manager about bartending schools.
Please listen to everyone..Anyone that wants me to hire them and has went to bartending school makes me question why are they at a local bar. Really the only advantage would be maybe higher Class (stuffy) establishments or Vegas. And I bet they still want experience. Go bar back like they said get a feel for it and earn money not spend it on school. Good luck to you it can be a hard way to go.Bartending school...?
There's a decent one in Glenburnie, but I would recommend just trying to get a job at a bar for a while and learn on the job.

Bartending School??
I'd like to find how to become a bartender. What I'm wondering is, do most people go to a bartender school, or do they learn how "on the job"? If you learn it on the job, how do you get a job with no experience and suceed? Seems like it would be difficult to just walk into. Is Bartending School a big waste of time?Bartending School??
You dont need to go to bartending school. You need to buy a book called the Bartenders Guide, which gives you the recipes of every drink. The #1 fabulous quality of a bartender is his or her memory, and knowledge of drinks. If you can memorize the top 50 drinks, and at least know the core liquors in others, you'll be fine.
The easiest way to break into it is to be a server in a restaurant/bar, and let the manager know you want to become a bartender. Let him/her know that you know ALL your drinks (and really know them!) and then take on a day shift, see what you think. It will let the manager see how you do.
If you are friendly, have a good memory for recipes, and can handle stress (10 drinks need to be made for servers waiting for you to make them, you need to make two drinks for people at the bar, you just ran out of Grey Goose, and when yous tart to pull a Guiness, the keg blows) then you will be just fine.
Bartending school is a waste of money.
Best of luck!Bartending School??
I went to Bartending academy. It's not a waste of time or money. YOu technically could get the same education from on the job training and a book, but the Job Placement factor is invaluable. They have lots of ins to help people find jobs.Bartending School??
i don't know first hand but i have heard that bartending school is a waste of time. usually the bar will hire you as a bar back ((a bartenders assistant)) and also train on how they want you to bartend... that's just what i've heard.. i'm from florida, though.. it may be different from place to place.Bartending School??
i knew then
I too have consider this. Some tell me that schooling is a waste of time and money. I have been told that your pay depends on the employer. I can cost from a minimum of $600 dollars and up depending on your location and if they have competing schools nearby.
I am considering one in Sherman Oaks California near the corner of Van Nuys and Ventura Boulevards.

Bartending School?
I'm a 19 year old college student. The thought of going to bartending school has been percolating in my mind lately. I don't want to drop out of college. I just want to bartend part-time while I'm going to school for extra money. Anyway, Today I went to check out this school in Pittsburgh and it seemed to be legit. I saw the classroom/bar, their teaching license, and their job placement program. Then he said that it's only a 40 hour couse and I started to think somethings up. I've read things on the internet that bartending schools are a joke, a scam, or a waste of money.
Is there anyone here knows about bartending schools? Have you attended one or know someone who has? I'm only a broke college student so I don't want to waste hundreds of dollars on a scam.

I saw a scam on a job posting website it said u dont need experience, i told my bf about it cuz he wants to bartend too and they tried to make him pay for the classes over the phone and stuff, never give out your info ont he phone ever.
And i know some girls that do classes at a community college for like $200, but its once a week but thru another schoool (ABC for example) classes are $600 but you get through it alot sooner and they have the job placement programs. My bf's friend used to bartend in tampa and he said it got stressing and quit and got another job, but on the other hand i see lots of people enjoying it. I do promotions where i sample liquor out to people at events or sell it, sometimes i mix the drinks too and i think its fun. Thats anoter thing u should consider is try working promotions go to craigslist.org click on your city, then "marketing" "events" or "talent" they mostly look for females but some job are for males too good for extra money. U live in a big city too which is a plus, so u will have lots to do. sometimes they put bartending jobs ads in the newspaper u might want to look there or ask aroundBartending School?
I would have NEVER known what to do on the first day without school. BTW, the school I picked in L.A. (I visited all of 'em) is in Torrance if that helps.
The American school of Bartending in NJ is also a huge scam. They post all over their website that they have placement nationwide. The catch is that once your done spending like 900 bucks for the 40 hr class they say you have to lie to get a job!! Can you imagine?? HUGE WASTE Of time and money.
I attended a bar tending school called "The Bartending Academy" in Boise,ID and from my understanding they had locations nationwide. The program lasted two weeks and I attended courses every day for a couple of hours in the evening. I dont remember exactly how much it costed but I know it was between 200-$400. I would not recommend attending one of these schools, it was a complete waste of time. They told me they had placement services but it was all a lie everytime I would call for job leads they would ignore me or just send me to random restaurants they only guessed needed bartenders. The school did not last very long after I attended. Many people complained about their services and they shut down. I would recommend talking to people who have attended that school in particular instead of just jumping right into it. most companies would much rather hire someone with experience or within the company. I dont think many bars or restaurants take these bartending schools too serious.

I owned a bar in a college town back in 1984-1986. I found myself interviewing more bartenders than I ever wanted to see. When I opened the doors I sat back and did some research of my own. 1) how much experianced was my new employee. 2) where did they train. 3) what made me choose them for the job. Answers were: 1) I did not hire the most experianced person because they were rude with attitude. 2) Everyone I hired had no training from a school. THEY got a bartenders book and studied it and lived by it at the bar. 3) their attitude was what got most of them hired. They had good conversation skills and could vary from person to person with a smile and kept all customers happy!Bartending School?
i took a bartending class, and even though people snub their noses at you, The one i went to REALLY helped me out and taught me tricks that even seasoned bartenders i've encountered, dont know!
one problem for you though, deary... in order to serve alcohol in the USofA, you have to be old enough to DRINK alcohol in the USofA (21 toots)
I say... definately go to school... in a few years. I dont regret it at all.Bartending School?
i had 2 friends who did it. never got a job doing it 'caz u always hv to know somebody to work in a restaurant/ club/ bar. these locations can be family oriented, also u need some good social skills and charm to get ur foot in the door if u dont know anyone. i dont recommend doing it. u'll hv fun, but u can make more holding a actual part time job @ MacDonald's. lolBartending School?
Bartending classes I've seen only last a couple of sessions. Usually you can take them at night. Basicly they teach you how to mix drinks, manage inventory, spot fake ID's etc. At the end you take a test and if you pass you get your license.

I live in California. l am 19 I plan on being a bartender when I turn 21. I am actually an electrician but I just want to have something to do at night. I want to know if I have to be 21 to go bartending school. I know it seems like a simple question that I should know but I don't so help me out please.Bartending School?
You can part time as a bar back now and study your manual while you keep your day job.
Bartending school is a scam to steal money from the gullible.
No one hires a bartender because they handle the money. A bad barman can bankrupt a bar in a matter of months.
That's why you have to work your way up. So apply everywhere and do your homework and before you know it you will be a bartender.
Good Luck!!Bartending School?
Trust me, bar tending school is a HUGE waste of time and money. Managers look at that and laugh. You should get a restaurant job as a bar back, and work your way into bartending. Grab a copy of the Bartenders Bible too. Really take my advice, I am a bartender too!
School for bartending HA HA. Don't waste time and money and stay with what you are doing. Money looks good life looks good it is not as glamorous as you think Trust meBartending School?
who goes to bartending school?
I think you ought to focus moreon electrical work and especially Plumbing too for that matter...It's fun and a priceless skill... Bartending....I've done it. Fun for a bout a week and then it's a Hell. There really isn't much to it, except you have to know a few drink recipes (which can now be downloaded from internet), break up fights, keep from being robbed, and be up all night and sleep alll day.Bartending School?

I need to find extra work that is flexable. I thought about bartending school. I have heard that bartending school is a joke, and I have heard that it can land you a job, what can you tell me?Bartending School?
it is a joke
just a moneymaking venture for college/company
they generally have no connections for real jobs
mostly the macdonalds of the alcohol industry are the jobs they could put you in touch with
you could ring them yourself-as for qualifications those types of places are always looking for workers due to lousy pay rates so they'd be likely to train you anyway
as for flexible forget it you work when they callBartending School?
from what i've heard it's pointless because some of what they teach you is way different than what the bars will want, like different styles and drinks

I'm looking for a good bartending school near Albany, NY.
I tried a search for one but nothing came up, anyone know of a nationwide school that has courses near Albany?
Also, is going to a bartending school really the best way to become a bartender?Bartending school?
Sometimes working as a waitress with a liquor license may help. If you gain experience, you don't have to go to bartending school. Not sure if you can do that in NY but you can in GA. Check to see if Courtyard by Marriott needs any waitstaff. When I was a waitress there, I learned how to bartend because our location had to do everything to service the customer.
GOOD LUCK!

Is bartending school really worth it? I was thinking about taking classes. I would be working in TexasBartending School?
Have Fun and Good Luck!Bartending School?
Don't waste your money. You can learn more on the job than in those classes. Get a job waiting tables and you will learn the drink names by taking customer orders and by delivering those drinks you will learn what they look like and what glass they are served in. Its a very short step from waitress to bartender. Just wait for an opening behind the bar. In most places I have worked the wait staff made more money than the bartenders. If you want to work in a tavern or nightclub you can still learn on the job. When someone orders gin and tonic can you figure it out?Bartending School?
They are not worth it. I worked for a place that sent it's staff to one after I had been bartending for over 2 yrs. They had us make drinks you will NEVER get an order for and never told anyone about how to handle unruly crowds or people. They also don't give any 'real time' experience behind the bar like knowing how to work together when there is you, your cocktail waitress and 50 people all wanting drinks at the same time.Bartending School?
Save your money, get a job as a waitress, bar back or busser. Learn the business and work your way up to the bar back job.

I'm kind of interested in going to bartending school now that I'm 18 and almost out of high school, just for something different and fun to do during the summers. However, I have no idea where there are bartending classes in my area, how long they take or what kind of money is involved. Has anybody gone to bartending classes? Also do they help you with job placement, etc?Bartending school?
Don't go to bartending school. It's just a waste of money. They do try to help you find a job, but as a former bartender/bar manager of many years I can tell you that nobody wants to hire someone from bartending school. Get a job waitressing and learn how to deal with people. While you're doing that you can learn about mixing drinks. On-the-job training!Bartending school?
hmm.. all i know is that bartending classes last only a few sessions. my teacher went, and he said it was only two..
i don't think they help you with job placement=\Bartending school?
Most places want to train you themselves. If you have some experience in mixing drinks, even just on your own, or know basically what goes into drinks...bartending school can be expensive and most bars don't really care if that's on your resume. They'd rather train you the way THEY want you to make drinks.Bartending school?
Type Bartending schools into your favorite search engine and you'll find all kinds of sites. The local Jr. college in your area might have a class.
I don't know many Bartending schools, but I know you can always learn in a bar. I know, because I'm a professional bar-drinker!!
But anyways, why don't you just try getting a job at a bar. Just find out first if you don't need to be 21, or older.

Has anyone ever attended a bartending school? I have been looking at some in Austin that last about 2 weeks. They have job placement. I was just curious if anyone has or know someone who has and was it worth it.Bartending school?
I agree with the last person. I have been bartending for 4 years and I was a waitress and cocktail waitress for 3 years before that. From my experience working in many different types of restaurants, employers hire from within. They will offer open bartending positions to their barbacks and servers before they will even consider advertising a position or looking through past applications. And just because you went to bartending school does not mean you can bartend! Bartending schools will take anyone because they want your money. It's a good place to learn the basics, but they won't teach you what experience does. You will not be prepared for a bartending job just because you went to bartending school if you have no experience in the bar/restaurant industry. Being an intelligent, hardworking, reliable, fun, fast bartender with a ton of personality...they don't teach you that and that's what's going to get you a good job! Start as a barback or server and make sure your application says you have the intention of becoming a bartender! Then you wait for that opportunity and ask for it when a position becomes available. You have to prove yourself in that business before you get a good job like that!Bartending school?
They are expensive, but if you get a good job, it is well worth it. It is not particularly difficult, but just like anything else, you will have to study and demonstrate your proficiency.Bartending school?
i attended one in Denver after bartendingg for a cpl years. i did learn some really cool things, and enjoyed the experience. but i did not find the job placement to be of any help at all, and wound up back in school for massage. so yeah it was worth the knowledge that i did gain, but be prepared to find your own way after.Bartending school?
I have attended bartending school, however I went in San Francisco, it is well worth it. I have yet to find a job only because I haven't been looking, my day job supports me. The school is well worth it, its two weeks everyday, most schools have morning, afternoon, or eveninig options. They will teach you everything you need to know, I live in California and at some of the middle class to upper middle class bartenders make $300 - $500 in tips on Thursday, Friday, Saturday nights. Bar owners just want to know if you "have it" or not. The personality that will make you a good bartender, must be good with people.
Save your money!
Get a bar backing job, learn from real life experience! Bar tending school is a Big racket, they teach you what you can learn one day at a real job, and you will get paid instead of paying someone Else. And as for their "job placement" forget it. Any bar that actually hires from these schools is not worth working at at all. Basically restaurant/bar owners want experience and personality, not a computerized robotic bartender.

Good luck
I want to go to bartending school, but I cant find one near me?
Can someone help me find the closest school to butte montana?I want to go to bartending school, but I cant find one near me?
I can't really answer your question, but I can tell you that I believe bartending is a trade that is best learned on the job. In the 2 years I have been tending, I have become a fairly talented flair bartender and I have no formal education.I want to go to bartending school, but I cant find one near me?

How do I get a license to from Dept of Education to open a Bartending School?
I live in New York State and would like to open a school. I am reading that I need a license from the dept of education. Does anyone have anymore info on this? Is it mandatory to be licensed? ThanksHow do I get a license to from Dept of Education to open a Bartending School?
I'm not sure that the New York Department of Education is responsible for giving out a bartending license. I think you need to acquire that separately through some kind of bartending classes or certification. Here's a website that I found where you can do this.

I didn't have a hidden agenda. Your question clearly states the word "Bartending School"...so I'm not sure where you came up with that idea.

Do you need to go to bartending school to be a bartender in california?
I am a student and like to make different kind of drinks with friend. I am also interested to find a part time job as a bartender. I want to know do i need to go to bar tending school in CA to find a bar tending job? Or is better for finding a job because went to bar tending school.Do you need to go to bartending school to be a bartender in california?
I live in Florida, however most likely it is the same in California. You don't have to go to school, however, as you mentioned above, it will be easier for you to find a job with the classes under your belt. Like with any job, the employer wants experience or education (or both).
At-home experience will probably not suffice. Potential employers will want to see that you learned in a bar-environment, and have learned basic requirements of the job (like the wash-rinse-sanitize process).
Also, in Florida, anyone who serves alcohol (bartenders, servers, managers) MUST be certified through a short (usually an hour) class on basic safety measures.
However, bars are special in that your personality can get you a long way. It nevers hurts to stop into a bar, ask for a manager, and turn on the charm!
Good luck to you!Do you need to go to bartending school to be a bartender in california?
there are these bar tending schools that are only like 2 weeks long. and I think they range in price but the one near me is around 500 bucks. then you take a test and then you are certafied.

Bartending school or not to bartend school?
I have a chance to work at a bar and learn to bartend I am afraid that I wont be able to get a job without a license. Should I just go to bartending school??Bartending school or not to bartend school?
Im not a bartender, but I have considered it before, and if you really aspire to bartend, absolutely go to school. Pretty much any employer that's hiring will hire you and if you do some "extra credit" by mixing drinks for your friends or family in your spare time, you'll get the hang of the idea and you might pass the class sooner than expected. Plus no matter where you go there are always needs for bartenders and its a fun environment if you know what you're doing. Also you can make a heck of a lot of money if you do your job well, but if you're in it only for the part time job, then I'd pass on it.Bartending school or not to bartend school?
A bartender certification is not valued as much as actual experience. In chain establishments, it is common to see wait staff or "bar-backs" take on roles of a bartender and eventually become bartenders themselves.
As an owner, here's what I look for:
-Knowledge of how to make basic drinks (Midori Sour, Sex on the Beach, Tom Collins, and other IBA)
-Social people (Good at keeping customers interested, has a lot of friends)
-Quick (Making drinks, Identifying problems, Adaptable)
-The ability to say "NO" (I cannot stress this one enough)
How a certificate will help you:
-Laws pertaining to alcohol
-In the event that you (or the establishment) is brought up for alcohol charges (over-serving, operating after required closing time, permitting illegalities, etc.) , a certificate will help build credibility for your side
-Basic understanding of wine, malt beverages, and hard liquor
If you are offered an opportunity to bartend, take it - but plan to eventually get your certification.

Whats the best bartending school in Vegas?
I wanna go to bartending school.. I've heard of a couple but not one that was fully recommended. any suggestions??Whats the best bartending school in Vegas?
National Bartenders School
Now wait for all the idiots to tell you its a waste of time. When I managed restaurants we tend to hire those with experience and as an entry level we would hire a bartending school grad before bring someone up. We then have a person that can step in in a pinch to make drinks to aid the swamped bartenders. Learning the rest is just a matter of time and familiarity.

They'll find a school in your area. A lot of people (mostly bartenders who learned on their own) berate bartending school just as a matter of pride and an 'I'm better than you because I learned from experience' sort of attitude.
I've been bartending for over 10 years, went to bartending school in '97, and since then worked at some of the best bars in the country.
It's taken me from Bourbon Street, New Orleans, working and living in the french quarter for 8 years, wonderful experiences like managing night clubs for celebrities, meeting and befriending a long list of them, winning contests like 'Best Southern Comfort drink in New Orleans', to upscale restaurants, and good local bars.
A good way to look at it is, when you go to the school for 2 weeks, you get a crash course on exactly how to pour, what every spirit tastes like, information on all the liquors you'll be handling, what to do, what not to do, and primed with all the bar recipes you'll need to know to get out there and do it with confidence. Important tips like 'ladies first', how to NOT handle a glass by the rim, some cool flair tricks, how to clean your bar properly at the end of the night, there's a ton of stuff that the self starter won't know for years if they just learn from experience.
A better idea is to be prepared, by learning everything you can, and THEN gaining experience. You'll be miles ahead of the rest, and make more money. As for licensing, it's different in every state. There's usually a 2 hour class to take on alcohol serving and control, and I haven't seen them cost more than $30 in any state. Good for 1-2 years. Google it for New York and you'll find it.
Another plus is that no matter where you move, this school has job placement, forever.
I went to school and really enjoyed it. I only worked for a bartender for 2 years, but the experience was awesome. And what I learned at bartending school helped me hit the ground running instead of having to learn the basics of what people want!
I live in NC, so I can't help you for NY schools, but good luck!Obtaining a bartender license and Bartending school?
I heard bartending school is a rip off, and the only way to learn is to buy lots of booze and books, and have friends come over and just make lots of cool drinks over and over. Thats the same concept. That was what I was told. Because why pay so much for school when its simple to learn. But about that I am not entirely sure. My aunt never went to school for it and was a bartender for years.
It depends what states require it, I worked on a military post where they did the paper work for the licence for me to work on base, as far as my knowledge of the work , I started out just working at pubs, waitressing and learned the drinks, Then started applying for bartending jobs.Obtaining a bartender license and Bartending school?

Unless your a Mom or a student at home looking for a "bar tending" curriculum, I believe you may be in the wrong forum.
That being said, I can tell you from experience that bars usually want to train you themselves and classes are usually a waist of time. Get a good Bartenders Handbook and learn a few recipes.

I dont have money to go to bartedning school how can i become a bartender quickly? How can i become a bartender without going to bartending school?
Believe it or not, some states REQUIRE licenses for many food and beverage positions.
I suggest you start with your county health office. They should be able to tell you what the license requirements are - or should be for the county or counties or the cities you want to work in.
Get to know the bartender[s] in the establishment[s] you're interested in working. Getting to know the managers also goes a long way.
DON'T go in those places to get a buzz or get drunk. The best days and times to do your networking are Monday through Thursday: 2 PM to 4:30 PM and/or 9:00 PM to 10 PM. AND/OR, depending on the bar and state law, 12:45 AM until closing. Sometimes they'll let you stay after closing, while they clean up and re-stock for the next business day.
Saturday: 11 AM to 11:45 AM. 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
Sunday: Is a "pot luck" kind of day. It all depends on how busy that bar is. Many times, you could go in at 11:00 AM and chat with the bartender until "the crowd" starts coming in for the popular sporting event.
Generally, the busiest days of the week are Fridays and Saturdays. FORGET ABOUT ALL DAY FRIDAY AND FRIDAY NIGHT OR SATURDAY NIGHT. Bartenders are far too busy.
Any other times are the times when the bartender is busy tending bar and earning his/her money, tending bar and conversing with customers.
Most of the time, you're on your feet. Invest in a very comfortable pair of shoes or two pair of comfortable shoes. Why two pair? One pair airs-out one day, while you are working in the other. You should alternate wearing the shoes.
When you're busy, the hours fly - they go fast!
When its slow, they creep!
You will find-out and discover you will be your customers’ psychiatrist, psychologist, marriage counselor, Mr./Ms. Fixit, their “best friend”, etc. This is part of the job. Its how you build “a following” and how you increase your tips.
You better learn how to operate that register and make change very fast! Sometimes the bar is two or more “deep” This means all around the bar, the customers are standing - waiting for service. You’ll develop a system. It takes time AND thought.
You may have to start off getting ice, washing glasses, stocking beer and wine; cutting fruit; getting juices and doing all the other tasks necessary for keeping the bar running smooth.
Then you'll get to work the service bar or functions/banquets/parties. You may be able to pick-up a shift or two for lunch, during the week or lunch on Saturday and/or Sunday.
Ask the bartenders you befriend about attending a barternding school. Its worth looking into. If you decide not to do this, its a loss of some of your time and its entirely up to you.
A great book to invest in is "Mr. Boston's Deluxe Official Bartender's Guide" or "Mr. Boston's Recipe Book". Either is commonly referred to as "Mr. Boston" I THINK I would prefer the former rather than the latter. Each day when you go to work, take your book. Each day, when you leave, take your book. You may want to invest in both.
It has JUST ABOUT ALL the popular cocktails and drinks. When you have this book with you, your chances of "being stumped" about a drink or preparing that drink you forgot how to make, should be greatly reduced.
Many times the customers play a vey frustrating game. They try to "stump the bartender" and they make up their own names for drinks. If you can't find that drink in your book, ask the customer who ordered it. DON'T LOSE YOUR TEMPER!
For Heaven’s sake, PLEASE tip the bartender[s]. He/She/They have bills to pay - just like you do!
Thanks for asking your Q! I enjoyed answering it!

Ron Berue

Start working at a bar as a waitress. Learn the trick and the drinks of the trade and as time goes by you'll be making drinks like the rest of them. Then perhaps the bar you once worked at as a waitress will hire you as a bartender, then you can leave them once ready and get a good reference from them. How can i become a bartender without going to bartending school?
You should actually get a job as a barback, not a server.
Make sure you express interest in wanting to bartend and be willing to pick up any shift (even those crappy Monday lunches) and be on call for any bartender that can't make it in.
There are websites that can teach you how to bartend.
Don't fret about not going to school. Most folks I know that are bartenders didn't go to school and the folks that went to school to bartend aren't bartenders.
start serving at a restaurant and tell them before you are hired that you are interested in bartending.... don't take the job unless they agree to a time line of that happening... it doesn't hurt to be a hottie... sorry but its trueHow can i become a bartender without going to bartending school?

get get work in a joes bar - for basic people - like a sports bar - mostly guys - then you will be opening beers most of the time - work your way up from here learning from the pros

Is the final exam/speed test in bartending school done in front of your trainers?
I will be starting a bartending course next week. Monday-Thursday; 4 hour classes then I graduate and get my license if I pass the final exam which is 12 drinks in 6 minutes. For those who have done this before, is the final speed test done in front of everyone in the class or just the trainers?
Any tips?Is the final exam/speed test in bartending school done in front of your trainers?
As I recall from a buddy who did it, he poured in front of the class. If you are going to bartend, this shouldn't be a problem!
Good luck. As for tips, speed comes from muscle memory, as well as your ability to recall the recipes for each drink. Practice makes perfect. But that is the easy part. It's about personality, and not hating your job. Remember, you will be around drunken idiots, in a loud bar, all night. Every night. It takes endurance.

How do u know if ur bartending school is teaching the correct recipe,in cocktail books each recipes different?
Recipes are different in every cocktail recipe book too, so what gives bartening schools the correct recipe? Should u ask the manager of the bar the school places u with if they want the drinks made that way durring the interview or will they get mad at you for asking dumb questions? It's not a dumb question but...How do u know if ur bartending school is teaching the correct recipe,in cocktail books each recipes different?
If the school places you with a bartending job, more than likely you will use the recipes taught by the school. The school teaches you the "proper" way for "proper" places. If you are tending at a dance club then you probably didn't get placed there by the school.
I would say stick with what you know and only change up for specific customers. 9 times out of 10 the customer will tell you exactly what they want whether you know how to make it or not. Good luck. How do u know if ur bartending school is teaching the correct recipe,in cocktail books each recipes different?
I think the bar tending school will only teach the basics of bartending how to flip and toss shakers. The basic mixology and popular cocktails. You will learn som eof the recipes in the bar they will have their own specialty

Is bartending school worth it?
I'm 20, and I'm not that knowledgeable when it comes to alcohol. I know the basics, but not enough to get me anywhere. I'm relatively outgoing, and pretty good looking, not to sound full of myself, but most bars around me are dives so they don't need a barback and wont hire me with my lack of expeirence. So is bartending school the way to go?Is bartending school worth it?
Actually about 99% of the people that i know that went to bartending school ended up waiting tables after school was over. Some of those stuck it out and worked up the food chain to become a bartender.
So as a former bartender who worked my way up... the school is not worth it. Get a job working the floor someplace and work your way up! If you show that you are serious about wanting to get behind the bar they will more then likely be more then happy to train you...and that means you make money learning how to do it, not pay money to learn how to do it.Is bartending school worth it?
I was a bartender/barback/porter/etc for a little over 5 years. In that time I knew a few people that graduated from bartending school, but not many. Maybe 1 out of 10 bartenders and 1 out of 50 barbacks.
If you cannot get in the game at any level in your area I would suggest moving before bartending school, it is much cheaper.
In this area (Dallas) the bartending schools are expensive and from what I have seen their job placement leans heavily to hotel bars. Hotel bars are generally not percieved as a great bartending gig because you have a hard time establishing regulars and business is dependant on the economic conditions of where each guest is from instead of just the local economy. Believe it or not that is a big factor in your tips.
Try visiting some surrounding areas and filling out applications. When you are there ask the bartenders and managers what they think of bartending schools. Maybe the perception varies city by city, but in the Dallas area bartending school grads are not getting all the hot jobs.
Good luckIs bartending school worth it?
Find yourself a bartending job at a neighborhood bar first...they will usually train you...I have bar tended for about 12 years and I never had any formal training.....and I make big bucks ..the main thing is to be friendly and talk to EVERYONE and treat all people the same..even if you don't like them...trust me..I make an average of 40$ an hour at a little bitty bar. OH and don't forget to flirt with the old men !!Is bartending school worth it?
i went to bartending school and thought it was a joke. Big waste of money...they said they would help find a job...but never did.
