I would like to become a bartender...........is bartending school necessary?

I would like to become a bartender but I hear mixed answers about whether or not I should go to bartending school. Is bartending school suggested? How much does the average bartender make. Whats the best way to get hired because it seems like everyone wants someone with expierence..........Bartenders opinion preferred but all feedback is appreciated......thanks for your help in advance.I would like to become a bartender...........is bartending school necessary?
no not reallyI would like to become a bartender...........is bartending school necessary?
Barending school is necessary if you don't know what your doing. It helps you to help yourself be a proffesional. Contrary to all these answers! Most bartenders are out to get you drunk. That is illegal. It is illegal to be drunk in public. Most bars don't care and neither do bartenders.

Let's put it this way...the first time a customer asks for a Pimms #1 or a Pink Lady or a Pousse Cafe, you'll wish you HAD gone to bartender school! Seriously, tho, the job opportunities are considerably better if you HAVE taken a course...you'd learn about ordering, invoicing, fast assembly of [see above] complicated mixed drinks, and how to move gracefully behind the bar without screwing up. Plus which, the school will help get you placed in a job.I would like to become a bartender...........is bartending school necessary?
As someone who went to bar tending school, its a + but i have found that most places promote from within. every bar is different and they want to make sure you know when its busy and what the most commonly ordered drinks are, because those 2 things differ greatly from bar to bar. try getting a bar back job in the place you want to work, or near it.
no people hardly order mixed drinksI would like to become a bartender...........is bartending school necessary?
No....use others experience to learn and make drinks. Ask what others are drinking when socializing and ask them what is in the drink...buy yourself a cocktail book, pretty inexpensive...stay focused on the customers and learn to draw the best pints, know how to suggest a drink ...when applying for bartending jobs...they'll want to know what you can pour and first apply where the main customer drinks draft or bottled beer in pub/bar...then move on to the lounges..if you wanting to make a buck or two more....biggest tips come from friendly bartenders...Good Luck!
it's not necessary, but it does help get your foot in the door. i never went because i think it's too expensive and i had a lot of regular restaurant experience and a lot of restaurant and bar connections, so i was able to easily get a job and be trained.

the amount of money you make depends on how good you are, especially with people, not just drinks. the location and shifts you have is also a huge factor. if you work at a busy place, on the busy shifts, you can make REALLY good money. then again you can work at a slow restaurant on the mid-day shift and not make very much. your employer and state by state minimum wages make a difference.
