I paid $400. Books and practicing with liqour in your kitchen won't help much. Unless you know some who owns a bar ( and I didn't ) school was the only option for me. The school i went to had the price on the website.How much does bartending school typically cost?

You can also go to any bookstore (Borders, Barnes and Nobles, etc.) and buy a drink book and practice at home with liquor. It is hard to get a job at a decent restaurant or bar without experience.
