Should I go with or without bartending school?

I've heard both sides of the story. On one hand I've read that it covers job placement and pays more than going without it because you would have already know how to make drinks. I went to look at a Texas School of Bartending class to get more information and they looked like they were having fun.

At the same time I've heard from numerous sources that it's not needed, it's a waste of time/money and I could get my certification, and on one question here on Y!A throws away the applications because people with the school experience come in as know it alls. Then again, not all exployers are not the same.

I'm really stumped. Can anyone help me?

Thanks :DShould I go with or without bartending school?
Consider this: at the end of a two week course, you'll have two weeks of experience which may or may not be relevant to any particular bar and you'll be out hundreds of dollars. If you got a job at a bar instead, you'd MAKE a few hundred dollars and you'd get two weeks experience on the job that obviously IS relevant.

So, spend a few afternoons at a bar watching and learning, read a few how-to articles, learn how to measure, and memorize 8-10 recipes...learn some very basic info about vodka, gin, rum, tequila, whisky and a few popular liqueurs...then start putting in apps at some smaller places between 2-5 pm when it's not too busy. You'll do just fine without the school.Should I go with or without bartending school?
hello Diane! I co-owned a busy, popular pub for several years %26amp; had PLENTY of peeps walking in asking for jobs. Did I ask for their resemes? nope. did I sit down with them %26amp; have a brief chat (to gain a perception of their skills)? yep!

any kind of training background is beneficial to you. However, different businesses operate, well, differently.

besides, what good is an A-grade diploma in recipes etc. if you're generally a sad, sour person??? bartending has many rewards %26amp; fun is vital! good luck.....have a blast %26amp; be FRIENDLY! :-)Should I go with or without bartending school?
Hey there!!

I am a bartender in a decent size city and at one of the busiest night clubs here. If not the busiest. I have been tending bar all over for about 5 yrs now. I never went to school and have come to the conclusion that the slowest people behind the bar have gone to school.

For some reason - I have my own conclusions - the ones that go to school end up being too "right" behind the bar and perfect instead of the personality that makes the bar run. Bartending isnt all about knowing EVERY drink - bc different cities make drinks differently! - it is mostly about personality. As a customer I would rather deal with someone with personality then someone who just knows how to mix a cocktail.

I would say school is a waste of time and money. My DH was a manager for a long time and he wouldnt even interview people who had went to school.

JMOShould I go with or without bartending school?
My brother worked as a bartender in Kentucky, Paris, Madrid, Dublin %26amp; Moscow . What he had was a experience in drinks %26amp; cocktails but you should try tasting %26amp; experimenting it all for yourself.
Been in the business for a long time. Made a living tending bar and never went to school for it.

Tending bar is way more than making drinks. It is not like the movies. I would ask yourself if you have a great deal of patience, enthusiasm and energy. It also helps to have a decent self image and a healthy amount of self control.

It can be a very fun job, but it is a job. You are busting your *** and everyone else is partying, sometimes you lead the party, but it depends on the place and the boss.

If you are willing to work all holidays, weekends and can put up with drunk people, go for it. I have never regretted tending bar, I feel that the experiences have given me a great deal of wisdom and opened my eyes to many of the basic truths of how humans work.
