Why is Bartending School a waste?

If these schools are a waste (assuming its a legit institution), they how else can someone get a job bartending in the time it takes to finish the schooling? Keep in mind, with the same amount of knowledge they'd learn in class. Why is Bartending School a waste?
Most bartenders start out as waiters or waitresses, and get familiar with the drinks and the bar brands that way. I was taught free pouring by my bar manager. I only know one bartender who went to bartending school, and he was also the worst one I know. I'm sure some schools are legitimate, but many are scams. Why is Bartending School a waste?
Any jackass can go and bar tend without paying for bar tending school.
Because its only oncall jobs the pay sucks the hours suck and youll probably be drunk also. good dayWhy is Bartending School a waste?
I went to a bartending school it taught the basics, was it worth it yes and no. In the sense that I more than made my money back from taking the class, it was worth it. But most restaurants want experience and look at the class as extra fluff. Bartending school can teach you the liquors, liqueurs, drinks, counts and tools, but there is nothing like being in the trenches. Most bartenders I know started out as either servers or barback.
It's a lot cheaper to start out as a bar back. Why is Bartending School a waste?
I started stright into bartending without special schooling. It isn't hard to pick up making the drinks which will vary depending on when you are bartending anyway. Anybody can buy a bartender's guide to make drinks until they learn the popular ones by heart. The hardest part about bartending is getting in your stride to make sure that everyone has drinks and that you have gotten the money that you need from them. This also varies per location. Bartending can be a really different experience depending on if you are at a bar with a young crowd, a restaurant bar, a wine bar, etc. The knowledge and skills that you will need will also be vary different and are most easily taught on the job. If you believe bartending school will help you get ahead by all means do it. But first I would ask as many bartenders at as many bars as you can go to if they went to bartending school or not. I think that the majority will say no. Good luck!
check out www.totallyfreebartending.com. the schools are a waste, because the industry prefers to train their own bartenders, over hiring some "graduate" and having to "deprogram" him/her. mentioning "bartending school" is not a reason to get hired, it actually is a deterrent. in my 25 years in the restaurant/bar business i have not ever seen one actually get the job. start as a server, cocktail server, or barback, to get familiar with the business, and see, if this is for you. every place has their own procedures, and real life training can't be beat.
