Should I go to bartending school?

I got a new job as a dishwasher at a sports bar and restaurant and was hoping to move up to a busboy then waiter then bartender. I don't think bartending school will make much of a differance.Should I go to bartending school?
I never recommend anyone go to bartending school - the best (And usually only) way to get a job in the industry is to work your way up the food chain at a club/restaurant. Since you're already doing that, I would suggest that you save your money and just ask for extra shifts barbacking so that you can actually talk to and learn from the bartenders there.



IMHO, bartending schools are all scams and wastes of money - no one in the industry respects a 'degree' from them at all, and actually, I've seen it hurt people's chances at jobs because of the stigma attached to bartending school grads (They think they know much, much more then they actually do)



Keep on doing what you're doing, work your way up, learn everything you can from the bartenders at your place, and you'll get there eventually. Good luck!Should I go to bartending school?
in your situation, sure go for it! its only two weekends of mixing colored liquids and learning what any alky would know. in addition, i feel this would show your employer that you're serious about it and it's always easier to move people up within the restaurant then outside of it. ive been a bar manager for a couple years now and im only 25 so one can move up fast if the scenario is right.

let your boss know that you're taking the class and inform him/her that you would like to barback (a busboy exclusively for the bar).

there are two schools of thought here

One is to work your way up and the other is school

there are some community colleges that offer courses in Mixology or bar-tending. .

SO evaluate- - training for knowledge and technical data that you gain skill at- - verses waiting for someone telling you what they want you to know. .

I was taught to know every thing before testing

O J T will still take place But you will have skill
