Unless the state or county law requires it, it's not worth the money.
The best way to get a job as a bartender is to start at a new club as a bar back and then wait for the opportunity to move up.
At a restaurant, start as a server, start volunteering for bar back shifts and then move up from there.
If he's really really good looking with a fun personality, then he might be able to start cold at a new club - given he has work experience and references.

Bartending school sounds fun, but that's it. Best to get a job as a bar back. You'll be the designated slave of the bartenders, but you'll learn on the job and be in the environment. Show initiative, a willingness to learn, and some street smarts...maybe he'll get a break to bartend some nights.
I know bars, I hang out at bars, and I'll tell ya, bartending schools have nothing to do with bars.
99 percent of drinks ordered are simple. for example a rum and coke , vodka tonic etc...

There is the young crowd that orders a few fancy drinks, but usually there is only a handful of them and hardly worth a school. Even if he learns all the latest drinks, sure enough there will be new ones.
What bartending is ... is taking care of the customer by serving drinks-- taking money and cutting off the drunks.
It's a very easy job when it comes down to it. I'm not saying it's a easy job but the actual making/serving part is not really that hard.
What it does take is a person who is able to be in control and knows how to BS people.Is bartending school worth it?
bartender school cant be taken seriously...if you want to learn, get a volunteer positon at a bar for 3 weeks on weekends if no one will hire you. you will make tips and learn at the same time. also, bartending as a career is very limiting, look into something larger ie. restaurant management, hotel management if you like that industry, and get a diploma that counts.

I've worked in restaurants for a long time. Hear is what I suggest:
Learning to make drinks is easy. You do not need to go to school. Your boyfriend can study a bartenders drink dictionary and learn how to make the drinks.
The hard part is learning to multi-task and working a busy bar.
If he thinks he has the multi-tasking skills and the people skills to work at a bar, then I suggest that he lie on his resume. I've known many bartenders who have done it. They never check references. But even if they do, he can make up fictitious bars that can't be called for a reference. He can then gain experience from his first job, and it will be easy to find a job thereafter.
Another good way would be for him to get a job as a server in a restaurant. Most places promote their servers to bartenders.
i was a bartender for 6 years i really liked it i did not go to school you can go to a good book store get a book and learn your self i made good money lots of tips and enjoyed it you meet alot of people to make real good money you would have to go to a big town and a classy place
No, It's not cost effective. If no bar will hire you as a bar back, go to a restaurant. You can work up from waiter.
from my experience its not worth the money. most places wont hire you because most places still have signature drinks you have to learn. i know a few people who went but they said they wouldnt do it again.
