I've heard that these schools 1.) have no job placement and 2.) A resume doesn't need to have bartending school on it to get a job in bartending?Has anyone gotten an bartending job immidiately after finishing bartending school?
Lots of people get bartending jobs immediately after finishing bartending school - I should know, I was one of them. About three weeks after finishing studying at 'The Bartending School of Ontario', I had found myself a job bartending at a Brazillian BBQ restaurant. It wasn't glamourous, but it was a start, and a way to get more experience.
Job placement services vary from school to school. Some are more interested in just teaching you the drinks; others (like the school I went to) make industry connections and often have a leg up on which bars and restaurants are hiring, which certainly makes the job search much easier.
Do you need bartending school to get a job bartending? No, you don't, but it does help. When a bar manager is looking at the resumes of a few people, all without any real experience, and one of them has school, that one stands out.
It also depends which segment of the industry you're looking to work at. Jobs at studenty-places and nightclubs tend to be more concerned with looks and image than with skills and training (especially as you'll mostly just be grabbing beer and serving rums and coke), while restaurants (where you may not even be visible to most customers) are more concerned with what you've been able to proove that you can do. Pubs fall somewhere in between.
Good luck; it's a tough industry, but a fun and rewarding one as well.
