I'm desperately searching for a job, and alot of bartending jobs are open on my city. I know they make pretty good money, but besides mixing drinks for my friends and myself- I have no experience. I figure that I would have a better chance getting a job bartending if I got certified from a bartending school. Has anyone done this, or do you know if it's even worth it?Is it worth it to attend bartending school to become a certified bartender?
i have a lot of actor...i mean bartender friends. what i understand from them is that you can go to school to learn the drinks if you want, but you really get jobs from starting as a bar-back somewhere and working up. even if you had the certification from bartender school most places (around here at least) would start you as a bar back anyway. bartender school as i understand it is primarily a business to make money. but if you wanna learn the drinks you'd probably feel much more confident with that under your belt.Is it worth it to attend bartending school to become a certified bartender?
Hi, I always wanted to bartend also. You don't have to be certified to be a bartender. A friend of mine recommend a bartending course/ book so I ordered it off line it cost me 37.00. I really couldn't afford to go to bartending school here in Ft Myers the school would of cost me 500.00 dollars for a 2 week class. I had been attending FSU -University and now I am taking a break this year. To study the bartending book and work to make some money , I studied the bartending book and when I felt confident I applied for jobs. I got a job in Cape Coral not far from Ft Myers. A neighborhood Bar. I make great money . Anyway, I thought Id recommend this bartending book to you I wouldn't be working without it! But I did study my drinks and the book explains everything that you need to know to be a bartender. And you don't have to wait to start studying , that's what I liked its a great book. Any way its called Bartendingexposed.com I hope this info was helpful! And good luck.Is it worth it to attend bartending school to become a certified bartender?
No, it's not worth it.Is it worth it to attend bartending school to become a certified bartender?
When my company closed back in the 80's, they paid for re-training classes for anyone who wanted to get training. A friend and I took the Bartending School in Houston. It was fun, but we only actually learned the basic/traditional drinks like Manhattan, Rob Roy, martini, etc. What most of the class was about was "running" a bar, including how to store and present your bottles; why they all have the tax stamp across the top, and how a bar owner can keep close track of how much liquor is used, and how to pour, mix and shake pretty much anything. We used colored water and never used real liquor - ever.
How you have to wash the glasses in the triple sinks, what drinks go in what glasses. and on and on. I think it would be useful for you to have all that knowledge, in addition to getting familiar with the bazillions of new drinks that are out. But - I have been in bars lately where the bartender keeps a small recipe book on the bar in front of him and is not embarrassed at all about looking up the correct recipe when someone ordered something unusual. When you go to a few bars in the next few days - ask the bartender what he recommends and what you should do to be properly trained.
